Dog anxiety vest: does it work, and what size?

Quick answer

A dog anxiety vest is a snug wrap that puts gentle, steady pressure on the chest, on the theory that it calms a dog the way swaddling calms a baby. Studies are few and small: most found minimal benefit, a few found modest drops in heart rate or anxiety scores, and none reported harm. (VCA, Mathis 2024)

Treat a vest as a possible extra alongside reward-based training, never as the whole plan, and size it from the maker’s own chart. (VCA, AVSAB)

How we make money: This page has no paid links today. If we add any later they will be labelled.

  • Mild: try these steps

Your dog is uneasy in storms or on car trips but recovers quickly. A vest is worth trying alongside gentle training. (VCA)

  • Moderate: start a plan, talk to your vet

The fear comes back every time or is getting worse. Start a desensitisation plan and talk to your vet; a wrap alone is unlikely to be enough. (Merck, VCA)

  • Severe or sudden: see your vet now

Panic, frantic escape attempts or self-injury. See your vet now, whatever the vest seems to do. (ASPCA, Merck)

In short

Key takeaways

  1. The evidence is thin. A 2024 systematic review found only four eligible studies, judged the evidence weak and saw mostly minimal benefits. (Mathis 2024)
  2. Size from the maker’s own chart, measuring the chest just behind the front legs. One maker’s M is not another’s. (ThunderShirt, RC Pets)
  3. Put it on before the scary event and take it off after; ThunderShirt says remove it every one to two hours the first few times. (VCA, ThunderShirt FAQ)
  4. Pair it with desensitisation and counter-conditioning. Panic, injury or escape attempts need your vet, not a vest. (Merck, ASPCA)

The idea

How do anxiety vests work for dogs?

An anxiety vest, also sold as an anxiety wrap or calming shirt, fastens snugly around the chest and applies gentle pressure over the back and sides. The theory is that steady pressure calms a dog, like swaddling a crying infant. The ThunderShirt was first made for dogs afraid of storms; RC Pets says its At Ease vest uses compression knit for the same swaddling-like pressure. Weighted vests are a different idea and are not covered here. (VCA, Fear Free, RC Pets)

VCA’s honest summary is that little data confirms wraps work, though many owners report calmer dogs. A dog that goes quiet and still in a wrap may be inhibited, not relaxed, so learn the stress signs in dog body language. (VCA)

The evidence

Do anxiety vests work for dogs? What studies show

We searched PubMed for pressure wraps, ThunderShirts and anxiety wraps in dogs. The key source is a 2024 systematic review: of 229 studies screened, four met its criteria. Three were experiments with recorded fireworks or thunder, or separation from the owner; one followed storm-phobic dogs at home. Risk of bias was generally high, most studies reported minimal benefits, and none reported side effects. (Mathis 2024)

Three of the trials are in journals PubMed does not index, so their details below are as the 2024 review reports them; the fourth we summarise from its own abstract. (Mathis 2024, Fish 2017)

Two limits matter: the experiments lasted minutes, while storms can go on for hours, and only the uncontrolled study tested real storms at home. (Mathis 2024)

When to try one

When an anxiety wrap for dogs may help

VCA lists storms, fireworks, loud noises, visitors, nail trims, car travel, vacuum cleaners and separation as common reasons people use a wrap, and calls one worth trying for storm fear. The studies tested only noise and short separations. (VCA, VCA, Mathis 2024)

Sizing

How to measure a dog for an anxiety vest

  1. Stand your dog on a hard surface and use a soft tailor’s tape. (RC Pets)
  2. Measure around the full width of the torso, right behind the front legs: the widest part of the chest. (ThunderShirt, RC Pets)
  3. Weigh your dog if the chart lists weights. ThunderShirt’s does; RC Pets’ chart is girth only. (ThunderShirt, RC Pets)
  4. Use the chart for the exact style you buy. Between sizes, ThunderShirt says size down (classic styles) or up (Polo styles); RC Pets says size up. (ThunderShirt, RC Pets)
  5. On a male dog, check the belly strap does not cover or press on the genitals. (ThunderShirt FAQ)

How the size finder decides

The finder converts units exactly (an inch is 2.54 cm, a pound 0.45359237 kg) and gives a size only when the chest falls in one band and, on ThunderShirt’s chart, the weight falls in that same band. Neighbouring sizes share end points (13 inches is both ThunderShirt XXS and XS) and RC Pets’ bands overlap, so those get “measure and check”, not a guess. (ThunderShirt, RC Pets)

Wearing time

How long can a dog wear an anxiety vest?

ThunderShirt says remove it every one to two hours the first few times, and at least twice a day if you use it for extended periods. VCA says put the wrap on before the stressful event and take it off afterwards, because continuous wear may reduce its effect. RC Pets gives no wearing time, only that the vest does not work instantly. (ThunderShirt FAQ, VCA, RC Pets)

The studies used short spells, such as a 15-minute separation or a vest worn for about 30 to 40 minutes, so they say nothing about all-day wear. (Mathis 2024)

Training

Combining a vest with training

A wrap does not treat the cause of fear; VCA notes many anxious dogs need a wrap, medication and behaviour modification together. Merck says many fears respond to desensitisation and counter-conditioning. Keep every step reward-based: AVSAB recommends only reward-based methods and does not support aversive methods in any context. (VCA, Merck, AVSAB, AVSAB)

  1. Get your dog used to the vest at calm, happy times first, with treats, so it does not only predict storms. In one study owners put the wrap on three times without a storm. (VCA, Mathis 2024)
  2. Check comfort each time, and use it repeatedly rather than once; both may improve the chance of any benefit. (Vet Evidence)
  3. Counter-condition: pair the trigger with something your dog loves until it predicts good things. (VCA)
  4. Desensitise: start recordings at a volume that causes no distress and raise it only while your dog stays relaxed. If your dog becomes concerned, you went too far too fast. (VCA, Fear Free)
  5. Put the vest on before the event starts, and give your dog a safe spot. Do not shut in a crate a dog you cannot watch: many panic and can injure themselves. (VCA)

Never punish fear. Aversive methods carry risks of fear, anxiety, stress and aggression. For a fuller toolkit, start at the dog anxiety hub. (AVSAB)

Cautions

Who should not use an anxiety vest

No source we read lists medical conditions that rule a vest out, so if your dog has a skin, heart or breathing condition, ask your vet first. The cautions they do give:

  • Dogs showing skin irritation or physical discomfort in the vest: stop using it. (ThunderShirt FAQ)
  • Hot conditions: the maker says overheating is not usually a concern except in extreme heat, giving 90°F in the sun as its example. Leave it off then. (ThunderShirt FAQ)
  • Dogs that freeze or shut down in it. Stillness can mean inhibition, not calm. (VCA)
  • Dogs in panic, self-harming or trying to escape. A vest is not treatment; they need a vet. (ASPCA, VCA)
  • A dog with new trembling or shaking: rule out pain and illness first with why is my dog shaking? (Merck)

Getting help

When to see a vet vs a veterinary behaviourist

Start with your own vet, who can rule out medical causes; the ASPCA advises a vet visit before behaviour modification and before any medication. Your vet may discuss medication if fear is severe. (Merck, ASPCA, Fear Free)

A veterinary behaviourist is a vet board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists (DACVB) after an internship, a residency of 3 to 5 years and a board exam. As vets, they can treat both physical and behavioural diagnoses. (VCA)

Ask for a referral when fear does not improve with a plan, keeps getting worse, or comes with panic or injury. A behaviour consultant title on its own shows no particular qualification, and training is not legally regulated, so check the credentials. (VCA)

Red flags

Signs that need a vet, not a vest

  • Frantic escape attempts, or injuries such as broken teeth or torn paws from chewing and digging (ASPCA)
  • Panic: a sudden, profound fear response the dog cannot come out of (Merck)
  • Heavy panting and heavy drooling with the fear (ASPCA)
  • A dog that injures itself when confined during storms or fireworks (VCA)
  • Skin irritation, rubbing or discomfort from the vest (ThunderShirt FAQ)
  • Fear that is new, sudden or getting worse, which needs medical causes ruled out (Merck)

FAQ

Questions people ask

Do anxiety vests work for dogs?
For some dogs, a little, but the evidence is weak. A 2024 systematic review found only four studies that met its criteria, and most reported minimal benefits on behaviour or heart rate, with a high risk of bias. An earlier evidence summary concluded vests may have small benefits and may have none. Many owners report calmer dogs, but a still dog can be inhibited rather than relaxed. (Mathis 2024, Vet Evidence, VCA)
How long can a dog wear an anxiety vest?
ThunderShirt’s own advice is to take it off every one to two hours the first few times your dog wears it, and to remove it at least twice a day if you use it for long periods. VCA suggests putting a wrap on before a stressful event and taking it off afterwards, because continuous wear may make it less effective. Check the skin each time. (ThunderShirt FAQ, VCA)
How do I measure my dog for an anxiety vest?
Stand your dog on a hard floor and run a soft tailor’s tape around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs. Pull it snug but not tight, and read the figure without rounding. Both makers whose charts we use size by this chest girth first; ThunderShirt also lists weights. Enter the number in the size finder above, then check the chart of the exact vest you plan to buy. (ThunderShirt, RC Pets)
What size ThunderShirt does my dog need?
Go by ThunderShirt’s own chart, which pairs a chest range with a weight range for each size, from XXS under 8 lb to XXL at 110 lb and over. If the chest and the weight point to different sizes, or your dog sits on a shared end point, measure again and check the chart. For a dog on the cusp of a weight range, the maker says size down in the classic style. (ThunderShirt)
Should an anxiety vest be tight?
Snug, not tight. In one trial, dogs in a tightly fitted ThunderShirt had a smaller rise in heart rate than dogs in a loosely worn one or none, and a 2024 review noted tightness seemed to matter in two studies. Nobody yet knows how much pressure is needed. Check the straps sit clear of a male dog’s genitals, and stop if you see rubbing or skin irritation. (Mathis 2024, ThunderShirt FAQ)
Can an anxiety vest help with separation anxiety?
It is not a treatment on its own. In one study, a tight ThunderShirt was linked to a smaller rise in heart rate while dogs with anxiety disorders were shut away from their owners for a short time. But a wrap does not address the cause. Separation anxiety needs a vet check first and a behaviour modification plan, and your vet may discuss medication. (Mathis 2024, VCA, ASPCA)
