International siteIndian Pariah Dog Dog
The Indian Pariah is India’s own landrace dog, the one most people call an Indie or a desi dog. It is not a bred breed in the kennel club sense: it is a population shaped by living alongside people in Indian conditions for a very long time, which is exactly why it handles the climate better than anything imported. If you want one, adopt. There is no reason to buy.

What we could not establish about this breed
A landrace has no standard size, so this page gives no weight or height range and no growth chart. That is a fact about the population rather than a gap in our research.
Start here
Nobody needs to buy one of these
Indie dogs and puppies are available free or for a nominal fee from shelters in every Indian city, and an adoption fee of ₹0 to ₹2,000 on our sources usually covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation. This page is written for someone deciding whether an Indie suits their home, or identifying a dog they have already taken in, rather than for someone shopping.
In short
Key takeaways
- The Indian Pariah Dog comes from Across India. Medium, short coat.
- No registry descriptor or characterization study we could find gives a measured adult size for this breed, so this page gives none and shows no growth chart.
- Not registered with the ICAR National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources. We did not find a Kennel Club of India position we would cite.
- Suits the Indian climate. This is the dog the Indian climate produced.
- Short, close coat, which our data rates as low grooming effort.
- Our sources price a puppy at ₹0 to ₹5,000.
- No source we found publishes a population figure or a conservation status for this breed.

A 2025 paper in the Journal of Basic and Applied Research International studies growth and cranial morphometry in Indian Pariah dogs, so the population has been measured, but we could not reach the full text and so no figure from it appears here. As a landrace rather than a standardised breed, a single size range would be misleading in any case.
Growth
How big a Indian Pariah Dog gets
There is no growth chart on this page and no adult weight, because no source we would cite publishes one for the Indian Pariah Dog. The growth charts elsewhere on this site are built by scaling a published veterinary curve to a breed's adult weight range, and without that range there is nothing to scale. Pet retail pages do give figures for this breed. We have not used them: a number on a page selling puppies is not a breed standard, and the moment it appears in a table it starts being quoted as one.
Origin
Where the Indian Pariah Dog comes from
The Indian Pariah is a landrace: a population shaped by its environment and by living near people, rather than by a breeding programme aimed at a written standard. That is a different kind of thing from a Rajapalayam or a Labrador, and the difference matters when you try to describe its size, because a landrace varies by design.
The names move around. Indie, desi dog, pariah dog and INDog all point at broadly the same population, and "pariah" is a scientific term for a free-ranging landrace rather than a judgement about the dog.
What it was kept for
The Indian Pariah Dog's working role
Companion, and in many parts of India an unofficial guard around a house or a shop. Nothing in our sources supports stronger claims than that, in either direction.
A note on temperament
This section says what our sources say this breed was kept for, and stops there. We do not rank breeds by temperament and we do not describe any breed as aggressive. A breed bureau descriptor records what a dog looks like and what it is used for; it does not record what it is like to live with, and we are not going to supply the difference out of our own heads.
Indian climate
Suits the Indian climate
This is the dog the Indian climate produced. Every cooling cost, heat warning and humidity problem on the imported breed pages on this site exists because those dogs were developed somewhere else. The Indie was not.
Less than any other dog on this site. Short coat, no cooling bill, and a dog adapted to the conditions it lives in.
Dog with Blog puts ongoing monthly costs for an indie at ₹2,000 to ₹6,000, against ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 for several of the imported breeds we price.
Monsoon care is the one real job, and it is the same for any short-coated dog: dry the dog down to the skin after a wet walk, and check the ears.
A short coat that needs almost nothing: brushing, and drying properly after a wet walk in the monsoon.
Price
What a Indian Pariah Dog costs in India
Adoption is the answer here, and it is nearly free. Dog with Blog says most shelters and indie rescues charge nothing, or a nominal ₹500 to ₹2,000 that often covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation, and puts an adoption fee at ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 where one is charged. PawSpace gives ₹0 to ₹5,000 and the Supertails price list ₹0 to ₹3,000. Setting up costs about ₹4,000 to ₹9,000 either way.

The rupee figures on this site are held to the same rule as the price pages: three dated Indian sources or the figure does not appear. For the running cost of keeping a dog of this size, the dog price calculator adds up food, grooming, vaccinations and accessories from the same sources.
Running cost
What a dog this size costs to keep
Our food and grooming figures are sourced breed by breed for the imported breeds, not for the native ones. The calculator below is the imported-breed calculator; set it to a breed of roughly the same size as a Indian Pariah Dog and the food, vaccination and accessory lines are a fair guide, because those costs follow the dog's weight rather than its pedigree. The purchase price is not transferable and we would not pretend otherwise.

Delhi NCR is a metro. Across the metro cities our sources name, a Labrador Retriever runs ₹10,000 to ₹70,000. That is the general market across seller types, not the figure for one seller.
Inside Scroller’s metro rows run ₹10,000 in Kolkata to ₹58,000 in Mumbai. Supertails is higher, giving Delhi NCR ₹25,000 to ₹70,000 and Chennai ₹20,000 to ₹61,000, and adds that flight-nanny transport costs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on top.

Indian climate
Suits the Indian climate
Inside Scroller writes that in India’s climate the Labrador’s short coat handles heat better than double-coated breeds, while noting that a black coat absorbs more solar radiation than a lighter one, so midday outdoor exercise is best avoided in peak summer.
The Labrador Retriever was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory.

FAQ
Indian Pariah Dog: the questions people ask
- What is an Indie dog?
- The same dog as the Indian Pariah. Indie, desi dog and INDog are all names for India’s landrace dog, the one you see on Indian streets. "Pariah" here is a term for a free-ranging landrace, not a comment on the dog.
- How much does an Indie dog cost?
- Almost nothing, and you should not be buying one. Dog with Blog says most shelters and indie rescues charge nothing or a nominal ₹500 to ₹2,000, which often covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation. Budget ₹4,000 to ₹9,000 for setting up, and ₹2,000 to ₹6,000 a month after that.
- Are Indie dogs healthier than pedigree breeds?
- Our sources support a narrower claim than the one people usually make: an Indie is adapted to Indian conditions in a way imported breeds are not, which is why none of the heat, cooling and coat problems on our imported breed pages apply. That is not the same as a blanket health claim, and we will not make one.
- How big does an Indie dog get?
- It varies, by design. A landrace is not bred to a standard, so a single range would be misleading. Most are medium-sized. If you are adopting an adult, you can see exactly what you are getting, which is one of the practical advantages.
- Where do I adopt an Indie dog in India?
- Through a registered shelter or an indie rescue. Dog with Blog’s adoption guide describes the process: visiting a shelter, assessing the energy and temperament match for your home, ID and address proof, an adoption form and usually a home visit.
- Do Indie dogs make good apartment dogs?
- Many do, and the practical advantage is that adopting an adult lets you match the dog’s actual energy level to your home rather than guessing from a breed description.
- How big does a Indian Pariah Dog get?
- We have no figure we would print. There is no measured description of this breed from the national breed bureau and no characterization study we could find, and the figures on pet retail pages are not a breed standard. The page says so rather than borrowing one.
- Is the Indian Pariah Dog a recognised breed?
- Not registered with ICAR-NBAGR. Not registered as a breed with NBAGR. Registration is a process built around defined breeds with a home tract, which fits a landrace poorly. We did not find a Kennel Club of India position we would cite.

Breed facts here come from the ICAR National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, from peer-reviewed characterization studies, and from veterinary and state publications. Wikipedia is not a source on these pages: where it pointed us at a study or a registry entry we went and read that instead and cited it. No figure on this page comes from a page that sells dogs.
