Growth

How a Tangkhul Hui grows

The band below is our own calculation: we take the adult weight range from the source above and scale a published veterinary growth curve for the large size class to it. Nobody has weighed a cohort of Tangkhul Hui puppies month by month, so this is an estimate of the shape of the curve rather than a measurement of this breed.

Origin

Where the Tangkhul Hui comes from

The 2024 study in the Indian Journal of Animal Sciences describes the Haofa as a rare indigenous hound of Manipur, reared since time immemorial by the Tangkhul community living in the Ukhrul and Kamjong districts, and records a belief that the dogs migrated with the Tangkhuls into Ukhrul many years ago.

The dog is known both as Haofa, the name the study uses, and as Tangkhul Hui, the name people search for. This page covers both.

What it was kept for

The Tangkhul Hui's working role

A hound kept by a specific community in a specific place. The study set out to record origin, distribution and phenotype, and we are keeping to what it establishes.

A note on temperament

This section says what our sources say this breed was kept for, and stops there. We do not rank breeds by temperament and we do not describe any breed as aggressive. A breed bureau descriptor records what a dog looks like and what it is used for; it does not record what it is like to live with, and we are not going to supply the difference out of our own heads.

Indian climate

Suits the Indian climate

A hound kept in the hill districts of Manipur by the community that has reared it for a very long time. The study describes a dog embedded in local life rather than one that needs protecting from the climate.

The study records an average litter size at birth of 3 to 8.

As a rare breed with a small home range, acquiring one responsibly means going through the community and the districts where it is kept.

The study records detailed body measurements rather than a coat care regime, so we are not giving one.

Price

What a Tangkhul Hui costs in India

We found no three dated Indian price sources for the Tangkhul Hui, so this page gives no price.

That is not a coy way of saying the breed is expensive. Most native Indian breeds are not sold through the channels that publish prices at all: they change hands within a region, through shepherding and farming households and through state-run breeding centres, and no Indian pet publisher prices them. A shelter or rescue fee of ₹0 to ₹2,000 is the only dependably sourced figure we can offer you for a dog of this kind.

If you have seen this breed advertised at a particular price, treat the advertisement as the source it is. The price calculator covers the imported breeds that are priced by three or more Indian publishers.

Population

Conservation and population status

The study calls the Haofa a rare indigenous hound and was carried out specifically to document its origin, distribution and phenotypic characteristics in its breeding tract.

Running cost

What a dog this size costs to keep

Our food and grooming figures are sourced breed by breed for the imported breeds, not for the native ones. The calculator below is the imported-breed calculator; set it to a breed of roughly the same size as a Tangkhul Hui and the food, vaccination and accessory lines are a fair guide, because those costs follow the dog's weight rather than its pedigree. The purchase price is not transferable and we would not pretend otherwise.

Indian climate

Suits the Indian climate

Inside Scroller writes that in India’s climate the Labrador’s short coat handles heat better than double-coated breeds, while noting that a black coat absorbs more solar radiation than a lighter one, so midday outdoor exercise is best avoided in peak summer.

The Labrador Retriever was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory.

FAQ

Tangkhul Hui: the questions people ask

Is the Tangkhul Hui the same as the Haofa dog?
The peer-reviewed description of the indigenous hound reared by the Tangkhul community of Ukhrul and Kamjong is published under the name Haofa, and that is the dog this page describes. Tangkhul Hui is the name more commonly searched for.
How big is a Tangkhul Hui?
The 2024 study measured 100 adults: males averaged 25.13 kg and 61.24 cm at the withers, with a height range of 56 to 65 cm, and females 23.84 kg and 58.36 cm, with a range of 54 to 65 cm.
Where does the Tangkhul Hui come from?
The Ukhrul and Kamjong districts of Manipur, where it has been reared by the Tangkhul community. The study records a belief that the dogs migrated with the Tangkhuls into Ukhrul.
Is the Tangkhul Hui a registered breed?
Not in the register we were able to read. The 2024 characterization study is exactly the kind of documentation that leads to registration, so this may change.
Can I buy a Tangkhul Hui?
We found no price sources at all, which fits a rare dog kept within one community in two districts. If you are serious, the route is through Manipur and the community rather than through any market.
How big does a Tangkhul Hui get?
Adult weight 25.13±0.43 kg, range 23.00 to 31.00 (male) and 23.84±0.30 kg, range 22 to 29 (female). and Height at wither 61.24±0.39 cm, range 56.00 to 65.00 (male) and 58.36±0.51 cm, range 54.00 to 65.00 (female)., as our sources state it, which is 22 to 31 kg. Most of the weight gain is done by about 11 months for a dog in the large size class, on our own growth calculation rather than any measurement of this breed.
Is the Tangkhul Hui a recognised breed?
Not registered with ICAR-NBAGR. Not among the dog breeds NBAGR had registered at the time of the archived register we read. The 2024 study is the kind of documentation that precedes a registration. We did not find a Kennel Club of India listing we would cite.
