Cavachon full grown

A full grown Cavachon typically weighs 12 to 20 pounds and stands 10 to 13 inches at the shoulder. Both parents are small and close in size, which makes this one of the more predictable crosses: a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is 13 to 18 pounds and a Bichon Frise 12 to 18.

Fair. Four to five months is the usual time to make this estimate. It is reasonable now, but the range is still wide.

In short

Key takeaways

  1. A full grown Cavachon weighs 12 to 20 lb across all its sizes.
  2. No kennel club recognizes the Cavachon, so these are typical ranges built from the parent breeds and a veterinary publisher.
  3. Most of the growing is done by about 10 months.
  4. A curly or doodle coat means regular paid grooming, which is a real yearly cost.
  5. The chart below shows a band, not a line, because individual dogs vary.

Timing

When a Cavachon stops growing

In our figures, a dog in the small size class has done almost all of its weight gain by about 10 months. After that the weekly gain drops below a quarter of a percent of adult weight, which is slow enough that you will not see it on the scales week to week.

Height finishes earlier than weight. The AKC puts small breeds at full size by 6 to 8 months, medium breeds at around 12 months, and giant breeds at 12 to 18 months, with some very large breeds taking up to 24.

Variation

Why individual Cavachons differ

Published figures for the Cavachon disagree. Hepper puts it at 15 to 35 pounds, which is heavier than either parent breed at the top end. The parent standards bracket the dog at 12 to 20 pounds, and that is the range we use.

Because both parents sit within a few pounds of each other, a Cavachon varies less than most crosses. There is no Toy or Standard version.

The coat usually takes after the Bichon side: soft, slow-shedding and in need of regular clipping.

Running cost

Grooming a Cavachon

A curly or doodle coat is a running cost, and it is worth knowing the figure before you take a puppy home rather than after. The price per groom goes up with the size of the dog.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big is a Cavachon full grown?
12 to 20 pounds across every size this breed comes in, standing 10 to 13 inches at the shoulder. No registry recognizes this cross, so these are typical ranges rather than a standard.
How can I tell how big my Cavachon puppy will get?
Weigh your puppy and enter its age in the calculator on this page. It is already set to the small growth curve for this breed, so it works backwards from where your puppy is now rather than from the breed average. Four to six months is when the estimate is most reliable.
How often does a Cavachon need grooming?
A curly or doodle coat needs a groom every 4 to 6 weeks under published guidance. Over a year that adds up, and the grooming cost estimator works out what it comes to for a dog this size.
When does a Cavachon stop growing?
Weight gain slows to almost nothing at around 10 months for a dog in the small size class. Height finishes earlier than weight in every breed.
How big is a Cavachon full grown?
Typically 12 to 20 pounds at 10 to 13 inches. Sources disagree about the top of the range, so your own puppy's growth so far is the better guide.
When is a Cavachon fully grown?
Around ten months. Small dogs reach most of their adult weight well before a year.
Is a Cavachon the same as a Cavapoo?
No. A Cavachon crosses a Cavalier with a Bichon Frise, and a Cavapoo crosses a Cavalier with a Poodle. The Cavapoo has the wider size range of the two, because Poodles come in three sizes.

Method

How we calculate this

The adult weight and height come from the sources below. The shape of the growth chart comes from our own calculation on the open data behind a published veterinary growth standard, described on the how we calculate page. The charts are estimates built from a breed range and a population curve, not measurements of this breed.
