Havanese full grown

A full grown Havanese weighs 7 to 13 pounds and stands 8.5 to 11.5 inches at the shoulder. That is the AKC standard, and it is a narrow range by toy-breed standards. Most Havanese reach their adult weight by about ten months.

Fair. Four to five months is the usual time to make this estimate. It is reasonable now, but the range is still wide.

In short

Key takeaways

  1. A full grown Havanese weighs 7 to 13 lb across all its sizes.
  2. The weight and height here come from the official breed standard.
  3. Most of the growing is done by about 10 months.
  4. A long coat means regular paid grooming, which is a real yearly cost.
  5. "teacup" is a seller's word, not a recognized size.

Timing

When a Havanese stops growing

In our figures, a dog in the toy size class has done almost all of its weight gain by about 10 months. After that the weekly gain drops below a quarter of a percent of adult weight, which is slow enough that you will not see it on the scales week to week.

Height finishes earlier than weight. The AKC puts small breeds at full size by 6 to 8 months, medium breeds at around 12 months, and giant breeds at 12 to 18 months, with some very large breeds taking up to 24.

Variation

Why individual Havaneses differ

The AKC gives a genuine range here rather than a ceiling, which is unusual among toy breeds. A Havanese at 7 pounds and one at 13 are both within the standard.

The coat is long, silky and double. Left long it needs daily brushing; many owners keep it in a short clip instead, which is the cheaper option over a year.

Sales words

"teacup" is not a size

You will see Havanese puppies advertised as "teacup". None of those is a recognized variety in any registry.

The Chihuahua Club of America, writing about its own breed, lists “Teacup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard” as labels attached to the breed and calls them incorrect and misleading, used to make a puppy seem more valuable. The same reasoning applies wherever the words turn up.

A puppy sold under one of these labels grows up as an ordinary Havanese, usually at the light end of the range and sometimes not. The label tells you nothing useful about adult size. Your puppy's own weight does, which is what the calculator on this page uses.

Running cost

Grooming a Havanese

A long coat is a running cost, and it is worth knowing the figure before you take a puppy home rather than after. The price per groom goes up with the size of the dog.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big is a Havanese full grown?
7 to 13 pounds across every size this breed comes in, standing 8.5 to 11.5 inches at the shoulder. Those figures come from the breed standard.
How can I tell how big my Havanese puppy will get?
Weigh your puppy and enter its age in the calculator on this page. It is already set to the toy growth curve for this breed, so it works backwards from where your puppy is now rather than from the breed average. Four to six months is when the estimate is most reliable.
How often does a Havanese need grooming?
A long coat needs a groom every 4 to 8 weeks under published guidance. Over a year that adds up, and the grooming cost estimator works out what it comes to for a dog this size.
When does a Havanese stop growing?
Weight gain slows to almost nothing at around 10 months for a dog in the toy size class. Height finishes earlier than weight in every breed.
How big do Havanese get?
7 to 13 pounds at 8.5 to 11.5 inches, under the AKC standard. The breed is sturdier than its weight suggests.
When is a Havanese full grown?
By about ten months for weight. The coat takes much longer and often does not reach its adult texture until two years.
How much does Havanese grooming cost?
A long coat on a small dog runs at the lower end of published prices, with a full groom and haircut from about $50. Published guidance puts a long coat on a four to eight week cycle.

How we calculate this

The adult weight and height come from the sources below. The shape of the growth chart comes from our own calculation on the open data behind a published veterinary growth standard, described on the how we calculate page. The charts are estimates built from a breed range and a population curve, not measurements of this breed.
