Maltipoo full grown

A full grown Maltipoo weighs 5 to 20 pounds and stands 8 to 14 inches at the shoulder. Most land in the lower half of that, because the Maltese parent is under 7 pounds. A Maltipoo is at its adult weight by about ten months.

Fair. Four to five months is the usual time to make this estimate. It is reasonable now, but the range is still wide.

Estimate only. For health questions, ask your vet. Mixed breeds can land outside the range.

In short

Key takeaways

  1. A full grown Maltipoo weighs 5 to 20 lb across all its sizes.
  2. No kennel club recognizes the Maltipoo, so these are typical ranges built from the parent breeds and a veterinary publisher.
  3. Most of the growing is done by about 10 months.
  4. A curly or doodle coat means regular paid grooming, which is a real yearly cost.
  5. "teacup" is a seller's word, not a recognized size.

PetMD gives 5 to 20 pounds and 8 to 14 inches. The AKC puts a Maltese under 7 pounds, a Toy Poodle at 4 to 6 and a Miniature Poodle at 10 to 15.

Timing

When a Maltipoo stops growing

In our figures, a dog in the toy size class has done almost all of its weight gain by about 10 months. After that the weekly gain drops below a quarter of a percent of adult weight, which is slow enough that you will not see it on the scales week to week.

Height finishes earlier than weight. The AKC puts small breeds at full size by 6 to 8 months, medium breeds at around 12 months, and giant breeds at 12 to 18 months, with some very large breeds taking up to 24.

Variation

Why individual Maltipoos differ

Both parents are small, so a Maltipoo is always a small dog. The spread inside that comes from the Poodle side: a Toy Poodle parent keeps a Maltipoo under about 10 pounds, a Miniature Poodle parent pushes it toward 15 or 20.

Maltipoos are sold as "teacup" more often than most mixes. There is no teacup size. A dog advertised that way is a small Maltipoo, and breeding deliberately for very low weight is linked to health problems rather than to a recognized variety.

Sales words

"teacup" is not a size

You will see Maltipoo puppies advertised as "teacup", "micro". None of those is a recognized variety in any registry.

The Chihuahua Club of America, writing about its own breed, lists “Teacup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard” as labels attached to the breed and calls them incorrect and misleading, used to make a puppy seem more valuable. The same reasoning applies wherever the words turn up.

A puppy sold under one of these labels grows up as an ordinary Maltipoo, usually at the light end of the range and sometimes not. The label tells you nothing useful about adult size. Your puppy's own weight does, which is what the calculator on this page uses.

Running cost

Grooming a Maltipoo

A curly or doodle coat is a running cost, and it is worth knowing the figure before you take a puppy home rather than after. The price per groom goes up with the size of the dog.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big is a Maltipoo full grown?
5 to 20 pounds across every size this breed comes in, standing 8 to 14 inches at the shoulder. No registry recognizes this cross, so these are typical ranges rather than a standard.
How can I tell how big my Maltipoo puppy will get?
Weigh your puppy and enter its age in the calculator on this page. It is already set to the toy growth curve for this breed, so it works backwards from where your puppy is now rather than from the breed average. Four to six months is when the estimate is most reliable.
How often does a Maltipoo need grooming?
A curly or doodle coat needs a groom every 4 to 6 weeks under published guidance. Over a year that adds up, and the grooming cost estimator works out what it comes to for a dog this size.
When does a Maltipoo stop growing?
Weight gain slows to almost nothing at around 10 months for a dog in the toy size class. Height finishes earlier than weight in every breed.
How big do Maltipoos get?
Five to 20 pounds, at 8 to 14 inches tall. If you know which Poodle was used, that narrows it: a Toy Poodle parent usually means under 10 pounds.
Is there such a thing as a teacup Maltipoo?
No registry recognizes a teacup size in any breed. The Chihuahua Club of America calls labels like teacup and pocket size "incorrect and misleading", used to make a puppy seem more valuable. The same applies to a Maltipoo.
When is a Maltipoo full grown?
By about ten months for weight. Small dogs finish earlier than large ones, and our figures put the toy size class at 95 percent of adult weight at around 15 months with almost all of that reached by ten.

Method

How we calculate this

The adult weight and height come from the sources below. The shape of the growth chart comes from our own calculation on the open data behind a published veterinary growth standard, described on the how we calculate page. The charts are estimates built from a breed range and a population curve, not measurements of this breed.
