Shih Poo full grown

A full grown Shih Poo usually weighs 7 to 16 pounds and stands 8 to 11 inches at the shoulder. The AKC puts a Shih Tzu at 9 to 16 pounds and a Toy Poodle at 4 to 6, and a Shih Poo lands between the two.

Fair. Four to five months is the usual time to make this estimate. It is reasonable now, but the range is still wide.

In short

Key takeaways

  1. A full grown Shih Poo weighs 7 to 16 lb across all its sizes.
  2. No kennel club recognizes the Shih Poo, so these are typical ranges built from the parent breeds and a veterinary publisher.
  3. Most of the growing is done by about 10 months.
  4. A curly or doodle coat means regular paid grooming, which is a real yearly cost.
  5. "teacup" is a seller's word, not a recognized size.

PetMD does not print a range for the Shih Poo itself. It gives the parent figures and says the cross stays around that size, so this range is built from the two AKC standards.

Timing

When a Shih Poo stops growing

In our figures, a dog in the toy size class has done almost all of its weight gain by about 10 months. After that the weekly gain drops below a quarter of a percent of adult weight, which is slow enough that you will not see it on the scales week to week.

Height finishes earlier than weight. The AKC puts small breeds at full size by 6 to 8 months, medium breeds at around 12 months, and giant breeds at 12 to 18 months, with some very large breeds taking up to 24.

Variation

Why individual Shih Poos differ

Both parents are small, so a Shih Poo is always a small dog. The Shih Tzu is the heavier side at 9 to 16 pounds, and a Shih Poo tends to land below its Shih Tzu parent.

The coat can take the Shih Tzu's long straight hair, the Poodle's curl, or a wave between the two. All three keep growing and need clipping.

Shih Poos are sometimes advertised as "imperial" or "teacup". Neither is a recognized size in either parent breed.

Sales words

"teacup" is not a size

You will see Shih Poo puppies advertised as "teacup", "imperial". None of those is a recognized variety in any registry.

The Chihuahua Club of America, writing about its own breed, lists “Teacup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard” as labels attached to the breed and calls them incorrect and misleading, used to make a puppy seem more valuable. The same reasoning applies wherever the words turn up.

A puppy sold under one of these labels grows up as an ordinary Shih Poo, usually at the light end of the range and sometimes not. The label tells you nothing useful about adult size. Your puppy's own weight does, which is what the calculator on this page uses.

Running cost

Grooming a Shih Poo

A curly or doodle coat is a running cost, and it is worth knowing the figure before you take a puppy home rather than after. The price per groom goes up with the size of the dog.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big is a Shih Poo full grown?
7 to 16 pounds across every size this breed comes in, standing 8 to 11 inches at the shoulder. No registry recognizes this cross, so these are typical ranges rather than a standard.
How can I tell how big my Shih Poo puppy will get?
Weigh your puppy and enter its age in the calculator on this page. It is already set to the toy growth curve for this breed, so it works backwards from where your puppy is now rather than from the breed average. Four to six months is when the estimate is most reliable.
How often does a Shih Poo need grooming?
A curly or doodle coat needs a groom every 4 to 6 weeks under published guidance. Over a year that adds up, and the grooming cost estimator works out what it comes to for a dog this size.
When does a Shih Poo stop growing?
Weight gain slows to almost nothing at around 10 months for a dog in the toy size class. Height finishes earlier than weight in every breed.
How big is a Shih Poo full grown?
Usually 7 to 16 pounds at 8 to 11 inches. A Toy Poodle parent pulls the weight down; a larger Shih Tzu parent pushes it up.
When does a Shih Poo stop growing?
By about ten months for weight, like most toy-size dogs.
Is an imperial Shih Poo a real size?
No. Neither the Shih Tzu nor the Poodle standard has an imperial or teacup variety. The words describe a small dog and set a higher price, nothing more.

Method

How we calculate this

The adult weight and height come from the sources below. The shape of the growth chart comes from our own calculation on the open data behind a published veterinary growth standard, described on the how we calculate page. The charts are estimates built from a breed range and a population curve, not measurements of this breed.
