Poodle full grown

A full grown Standard Poodle weighs 60 to 70 pounds if male and 40 to 50 pounds if female, and stands over 15 inches. A Miniature Poodle is 10 to 15 pounds at 10 to 15 inches. A Toy Poodle is 4 to 6 pounds at no more than 10 inches. All three are the same breed, separated by height alone.

Fair. Four to five months is the usual time to make this estimate. It is reasonable now, but the range is still wide.

In short

Key takeaways

  1. A full grown Poodle weighs 4 to 70 lb across all its sizes.
  2. The weight and height here come from the official breed standard.
  3. Most of the growing is done by about 11 months.
  4. A curly or doodle coat means regular paid grooming, which is a real yearly cost.
  5. "teacup" is a seller's word, not a recognized size.

The AKC standard sets height rather than weight: a Standard Poodle is "over 15 inches" at the shoulder. The weights are the figures the AKC publishes alongside it.

Timing

When a Poodle stops growing

In our figures, a dog in the large size class has done almost all of its weight gain by about 11 months. After that the weekly gain drops below a quarter of a percent of adult weight, which is slow enough that you will not see it on the scales week to week.

Height finishes earlier than weight. The AKC puts small breeds at full size by 6 to 8 months, medium breeds at around 12 months, and giant breeds at 12 to 18 months, with some very large breeds taking up to 24. In a breed with several sizes, the smaller variety finishes first: that is a size effect, not a breed one.

Sex

Male and female

The breed standard gives different figures for males and females, and they are in the tables above. In the growth data behind our calculator, a female of a given size class is also slightly further along toward her adult weight at any given age than a male, so telling the calculator which you have shifts the estimate by a few percent.

Variation

Why individual Poodles differ

The three Poodle varieties are one breed in the AKC stud book, divided by height at the shoulder. A Poodle is sorted into a variety by how tall it finishes, not by who its parents were.

Because the dividing line is height, two Poodles of the same variety can be several pounds apart. A lean, leggy Standard and a heavier-boned one both belong in the same variety.

Sellers sometimes advertise a "teacup Poodle". There is no such variety. The smallest the AKC recognizes is the Toy, at no more than 10 inches.

Sales words

"teacup" is not a size

You will see Poodle puppies advertised as "teacup", "tiny toy". None of those is a recognized variety in any registry.

The Chihuahua Club of America, writing about its own breed, lists “Teacup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard” as labels attached to the breed and calls them incorrect and misleading, used to make a puppy seem more valuable. The same reasoning applies wherever the words turn up.

A puppy sold under one of these labels grows up as an ordinary Poodle, usually at the light end of the range and sometimes not. The label tells you nothing useful about adult size. Your puppy's own weight does, which is what the calculator on this page uses.

Running cost

Grooming a Poodle

A curly or doodle coat is a running cost, and it is worth knowing the figure before you take a puppy home rather than after. The price per groom goes up with the size of the dog.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big is a Poodle full grown?
4 to 70 pounds across every size this breed comes in, standing 15 to 24 inches at the shoulder. Those figures come from the breed standard.
How can I tell how big my Poodle puppy will get?
Weigh your puppy and enter its age in the calculator on this page. It is already set to the large growth curve for this breed, so it works backwards from where your puppy is now rather than from the breed average. Four to six months is when the estimate is most reliable.
How often does a Poodle need grooming?
A curly or doodle coat needs a groom every 4 to 6 weeks under published guidance. Over a year that adds up, and the grooming cost estimator works out what it comes to for a dog this size.
When does a Poodle stop growing?
Weight gain slows to almost nothing at around 11 months for a dog in the large size class. Height finishes earlier than weight in every breed.
How big is a Toy Poodle when full grown?
Four to six pounds, at no more than 10 inches at the shoulder. That is the AKC standard. A Toy Poodle reaches that weight early, usually by nine or ten months.
What is the difference between a Miniature and a Toy Poodle?
Height. A Toy Poodle is 10 inches or under. A Miniature is over 10 inches and up to 15 inches. A Standard is over 15 inches. Weight follows from height, not the other way round.
Is a teacup Poodle a real size?
No. The AKC recognizes three varieties, and teacup is not one of them. A dog sold as a teacup Poodle is a Toy Poodle, usually one at the small end, and the word is there to raise the price.

Method

How we calculate this

The adult weight and height come from the sources below. The shape of the growth chart comes from our own calculation on the open data behind a published veterinary growth standard, described on the how we calculate page. The charts are estimates built from a breed range and a population curve, not measurements of this breed.
