Chippiparai Dog

The Chippiparai is a sighthound from the Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar and Madurai districts of Tamil Nadu, registered by the national breed bureau in the first round alongside the Rajapalayam. NBAGR puts males at 60 to 76 cm at the withers and females at 54 to 70 cm, with adult weight from 13.6 to 32.5 kg. NBAGR also records that these dogs are called Kanni, which is why that name appears twice on this site.

How a Chippiparai grows

The band below is our own calculation: we take the adult weight range from the source above and scale a published veterinary growth curve for the large size class to it. Nobody has weighed a cohort of Chippiparai puppies month by month, so this is an estimate of the shape of the curve rather than a measurement of this breed.

Origin

Where the Chippiparai comes from

NBAGR records the breed across Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar and Madurai districts of Tamil Nadu, with an estimated population of about 6,000, the largest of the registered Indian dog breeds.

It was registered in the first round of Indian dog breed registrations under accession number INDIA_DOG_1800_CHIPPIPARAI_19002.

What it was kept for

The Chippiparai's working role

NBAGR records the utility as mainly guarding and hunting, and adds that the dogs are also kept as a hobby and a matter of pride by their owners. It notes they are high in obedience and easy to train.

A note on temperament

This section says what our sources say this breed was kept for, and stops there. We do not rank breeds by temperament and we do not describe any breed as aggressive. A breed bureau descriptor records what a dog looks like and what it is used for; it does not record what it is like to live with, and we are not going to supply the difference out of our own heads.

Indian climate

Suits the Indian climate

A short-coated sighthound from southern Tamil Nadu, kept in the hot dry districts it comes from. Like the Rajapalayam, it is a dog the Indian climate produced rather than one that has to be protected from it.

A sighthound’s needs: room to run, a soft place to lie, and very little grooming.

The breed overlaps with the Kanni in both name and territory, so if you are buying, ask the seller which dog they think they have and on what basis.

NBAGR describes a coat varying from fawn to dark brown, brownish black and black, and notes that black dogs carry white markings above both eyes or a black circle around them. Eyes are golden and oval, ears medium and drooping or semi-drooping.

Price

What a Chippiparai costs in India

We found no three dated Indian price sources for the Chippiparai, so this page gives no price. The Supertails price list gives ₹4,000 to ₹15,000 for the breed and the Kanni page on this site carries the same caution. Tamil Nadu veterinary services and the breed’s home districts are the sensible route.

That is not a coy way of saying the breed is expensive. Most native Indian breeds are not sold through the channels that publish prices at all: they change hands within a region, through shepherding and farming households and through state-run breeding centres, and no Indian pet publisher prices them. A shelter or rescue fee of ₹0 to ₹2,000 is the only dependably sourced figure we can offer you for a dog of this kind.

If you have seen this breed advertised at a particular price, treat the advertisement as the source it is. The price calculator covers the imported breeds that are priced by three or more Indian publishers.

Population

Conservation and population status

NBAGR estimates the population at about 6,000, the largest of the registered Indian dog breeds.

Running cost

What a dog this size costs to keep

Our food and grooming figures are sourced breed by breed for the imported breeds, not for the native ones. The calculator below is the imported-breed calculator; set it to a breed of roughly the same size as a Chippiparai and the food, vaccination and accessory lines are a fair guide, because those costs follow the dog's weight rather than its pedigree. The purchase price is not transferable and we would not pretend otherwise.

Indian climate

Suits the Indian climate

Inside Scroller writes that in India’s climate the Labrador’s short coat handles heat better than double-coated breeds, while noting that a black coat absorbs more solar radiation than a lighter one, so midday outdoor exercise is best avoided in peak summer.

The Labrador Retriever was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory.

FAQ

Chippiparai: the questions people ask

Is the Chippiparai the same as the Kanni?
The sources disagree, and we have kept separate pages because the question is unsettled. NBAGR’s own Chippiparai descriptor says these dogs "are also called as Kanni (virgin) or vettainaai (hunting dog)", which treats Kanni as another name for the same breed. A 2013 morphometric study treated the Kanni as a separate breed and measured it separately, finding a mean adult weight of 23.50 kg for males and 18.51 kg for females. Both pages say this.
How big is a Chippiparai?
NBAGR gives 60 to 76 cm at the withers for males and 54 to 70 cm for females, with adult body weight from 13.6 to 32.5 kg. A separate study reports an overall mean height at withers of 59.56 cm.
What colour is a Chippiparai?
NBAGR describes the coat as varying from fawn to dark brown, brownish black and black, with black dogs carrying white markings above both eyes or a black circle around them, and golden oval eyes.
Is the Chippiparai registered?
Yes, with the ICAR National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, under accession number INDIA_DOG_1800_CHIPPIPARAI_19002. It was one of the first three Indian dog breeds registered.
What is a Chippiparai used for?
NBAGR records guarding and hunting, and notes the dogs are also kept as a hobby and a point of pride by their owners.
How big does a Chippiparai get?
Adult body weight ranges from 13.6 to 32.5 Kg. and Height at wither ranges from 60 to 76 cm in males and 54 to 70 cm in females., as our sources state it, which is 13.6 to 32.5 kg. Most of the weight gain is done by about 11 months for a dog in the large size class, on our own growth calculation rather than any measurement of this breed.
Is the Chippiparai a recognised breed?
Registered with ICAR-NBAGR, accession INDIA_DOG_1800_CHIPPIPARAI_19002. One of the first three dog breeds NBAGR registered. We did not find a Kennel Club of India listing we would cite for this breed.
