Mudhol Hound Dog

The Mudhol Hound is a tall sighthound from the Bagalkot and Vijayapur districts of Karnataka, registered by the national breed bureau and the best known of India’s native hounds. NBAGR puts males at 73 to 80 cm at the withers and females at 61 to 74 cm, with adult weight from 21 to 40 kg. It is the same dog the Kennel Club of India registers as the Caravan Hound.

How a Mudhol Hound grows

The band below is our own calculation: we take the adult weight range from the source above and scale a published veterinary growth curve for the large size class to it. Nobody has weighed a cohort of Mudhol Hound puppies month by month, so this is an estimate of the shape of the curve rather than a measurement of this breed.

Origin

Where the Mudhol Hound comes from

NBAGR records the breed in the Bagalkot and Vijayapur districts of Karnataka, with an estimated population of about 1,500, and lists Pissouri Hound and Lahori Hound as other names for it.

The naming is genuinely contested, and worth understanding before you buy. Dog with Blog reports that the Kennel Club of India registers the breed as the Caravan Hound while the Indian National Kennel Club uses Mudhol Hound, and that some hold the older Karwani of Maharashtra to be a distinct landrace from the dog Karnataka developed as a state breed. We treat them as one breed under two names here, because that is how the two registries treat them, and we have said what the disagreement is.

What it was kept for

The Mudhol Hound's working role

NBAGR records the utility as guarding and shepherding, and notes the dogs are high in obedience and easier to train.

The bureau describes a strongly built, symmetrical dog with an elegant and lean look, a long narrow skull, a long deep chest, a well tucked abdomen and a long tapering slightly curved tail.

A note on temperament

This section says what our sources say this breed was kept for, and stops there. We do not rank breeds by temperament and we do not describe any breed as aggressive. A breed bureau descriptor records what a dog looks like and what it is used for; it does not record what it is like to live with, and we are not going to supply the difference out of our own heads.

Indian climate

Suits the Indian climate

A sighthound from the Deccan, built lean with a short coat. NBAGR describes high stamina and endurance and a gait that gives an effortless, flying stride. Nothing about this dog was designed for anywhere but here.

Space and running are the requirements. At 73 to 80 cm at the shoulder for a male this is a very tall dog, taller than most of the imported giants on this site, though far lighter.

The short coat is almost no work. A lean sighthound with little body fat needs somewhere soft to lie, which is the practical thing most new owners miss.

NBAGR lists coat colours as mainly white, brown, patchy, brindle, black and fawn, along with spotted. A short sighthound coat needs very little.

Price

What a Mudhol Hound costs in India

We found no three dated Indian price sources for the Mudhol Hound, so this page gives no price. The Supertails price list gives ₹3,000 to ₹15,000 for the breed, but we need three dated Indian sources and we found one. Karnataka runs a canine research centre at Mudhol associated with the breed, which is the sensible starting point.

That is not a coy way of saying the breed is expensive. Most native Indian breeds are not sold through the channels that publish prices at all: they change hands within a region, through shepherding and farming households and through state-run breeding centres, and no Indian pet publisher prices them. A shelter or rescue fee of ₹0 to ₹2,000 is the only dependably sourced figure we can offer you for a dog of this kind.

If you have seen this breed advertised at a particular price, treat the advertisement as the source it is. The price calculator covers the imported breeds that are priced by three or more Indian publishers.

Population

Conservation and population status

NBAGR estimates the population at about 1,500, the smallest figure the bureau gives for any of the registered dog breeds.

Running cost

What a dog this size costs to keep

Our food and grooming figures are sourced breed by breed for the imported breeds, not for the native ones. The calculator below is the imported-breed calculator; set it to a breed of roughly the same size as a Mudhol Hound and the food, vaccination and accessory lines are a fair guide, because those costs follow the dog's weight rather than its pedigree. The purchase price is not transferable and we would not pretend otherwise.

Indian climate

Suits the Indian climate

Inside Scroller writes that in India’s climate the Labrador’s short coat handles heat better than double-coated breeds, while noting that a black coat absorbs more solar radiation than a lighter one, so midday outdoor exercise is best avoided in peak summer.

The Labrador Retriever was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory.

FAQ

Mudhol Hound: the questions people ask

Is the Caravan Hound the same as the Mudhol Hound?
For practical purposes yes, and the page you are reading covers both names. Dog with Blog reports that the Kennel Club of India registers the breed as the Caravan Hound while the Indian National Kennel Club uses Mudhol Hound. The complication is that some hold the older Karwani of Maharashtra to be a distinct landrace from the dog Karnataka developed as a state breed. NBAGR itself lists Pissouri Hound and Lahori Hound as alternative names and does not mention Caravan Hound.
How tall is a Mudhol Hound?
NBAGR gives 73 to 80 cm at the withers for males and 61 to 74 cm for females, with adult body weight from 21 to 40 kg. That makes it taller at the shoulder than a Rottweiler and much lighter.
Is the Mudhol Hound a recognised breed?
Yes. It is registered with the ICAR National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources under accession number INDIA_DOG_0800_MUDHOLHOUND_19003, one of the first three Indian dog breeds registered, and it is recognised by both Indian kennel clubs, under different names.
What is a Mudhol Hound used for?
NBAGR records guarding and shepherding, and describes high stamina, endurance and an effortless stride. The breed has also been used by Indian security forces, which is where much of its public profile comes from.
Can a Mudhol Hound live in a flat?
Our sources do not address it directly, and we would rather say that than guess. What they do say is that this is a 73 to 80 cm sighthound bred for stamina and running in open country, which is the fact to weigh.
How many Mudhol Hounds are there?
NBAGR estimates about 1,500, which is the smallest population figure the bureau gives for any registered Indian dog breed.
How big does a Mudhol Hound get?
Adult body weight ranges from 21 to 40 kg. and Height at wither ranges from 73 to 80 cm in males, and 61 to 74 cm in females., as our sources state it, which is 21 to 40 kg. Most of the weight gain is done by about 11 months for a dog in the large size class, on our own growth calculation rather than any measurement of this breed.
