Kangal Price in India (2026)

A Kangal puppy in India costs about ₹50,000 to ₹1,50,000 from local stock and ₹1,00,000 to ₹2,50,000 with documented pedigree, while a direct Turkish import runs ₹1,20,000 to ₹3,50,000 before ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 of shipping, permits and quarantine. The breed is genuinely rare in India, so almost every figure here is about where the dog came from rather than how good it is.

Suits the Indian climate

The FCI standard describes the breed as hard working and capable of enduring extremes of heat. Supertails writes that Kangals are highly adaptable and can thrive in India’s diverse climates with proper care, needing extra attention in hot and humid regions.

Legal status

The Kangal was named in the 2024 central advisory, which no longer stands.

The Kangal was named in the central advisory of 12 March 2024. The Karnataka High Court quashed that circular on 10 April 2024, the Delhi High Court set it aside in April 2024, and in January 2025 the Union government told the Bombay High Court it was not acting on it. Importing a dog is a separate question from keeping one, and import permits are handled by a different part of government again, so take advice before committing to an import.

Checked . This is a summary of what the sources below report. It is not legal advice, and the position can differ by state and by housing society.

The price

Kangal price by seller type

Who you buy from moves this price more than anything else does. Each row is the range our Indian sources state for that kind of seller, with the sources named in the notes column.

Where fromPrice in ₹What the sources say
Unregistered home breeder₹50,000 to ₹1,50,000Inside Scroller prices an India-bred Kangal from local stock at ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000. Pets Worth Guide gives ₹50,000 to ₹90,000 for an India-bred puppy and ₹40,000 to ₹60,000 for a basic local puppy with no papers. Pet Care Tips gives ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000 for a locally bred one.
KCI-registered breeder₹1,00,000 to ₹2,50,000 and upInside Scroller gives ₹1,00,000 to ₹2,50,000 and up for KCI registered or show quality. Pets Worth Guide gives ₹1,00,000 to ₹1,50,000 for a pedigree-documented puppy and says a certified ethical breeder will charge ₹1,00,000 to ₹1,50,000 or more.
Show quality₹1,20,000 to ₹2,00,000Pets Worth Guide adds that a show-quality dog can easily touch ₹2,00,000 while a pet-quality companion sits at ₹60,000 to ₹90,000.
Imported line₹1,20,000 to ₹3,50,000 and upInside Scroller gives ₹1,20,000 to ₹2,50,000 and up for a direct Turkish import, Pet Care Tips ₹1,50,000 to ₹3,00,000 and up, and Pets Worth Guide ₹2,00,000 to ₹3,50,000 and up. All three add ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 for shipping, permits, quarantine and health certification, which is not in the price above.
Pet shopNot priced by breedNo source we found prices a pet-shop puppy breed by breed. One Indian source puts a breed puppy from a pet shop at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 across all breeds.
Shelter or indie rescue₹0 to ₹2,000Most shelters and indie rescues charge nothing, or a nominal ₹500 to ₹2,000 that often covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation.

Variation

What changes a Kangal's price

Origin, not quality, sets the price. Every one of our three sources splits the market the same way: India-bred from limited local stock at the bottom, documented pedigree in the middle, direct Turkish import at the top.

The import add-on is a figure buyers routinely miss. All three sources put shipping, permits, quarantine and health certification at ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 on top of the purchase price.

Breed purity is the open question in the Indian market. Pets Worth Guide warns plainly that a dog sold as a Kangal at ₹80,000 to ₹2,00,000 needs its purity verified carefully, and that backyard breeders offering ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 dogs leave hidden costs in vet bills and behaviour.

Farming demand sets regional prices in a way it does not for any other breed here. Inside Scroller prices Punjab and Haryana separately on livestock-guarding demand.

What does not change it

No source we read prices a Kangal by age, so the calculator on this page has no age input. A puppy is priced as a puppy and an older dog is usually a rescue rather than a sale. No source states a price difference between the sexes in this breed either, so the calculator does not ask.

What a Kangal costs to keep

The calculator at the top of this page adds these up for you. The puppy price is not in the total: this is what the first year of keeping the dog costs on top of buying it.

LineFigureWhat it is
Food₹3,000 to ₹9,000 a monthInside Scroller gives ₹4,000 to ₹8,000, Pets Worth Guide ₹5,000 to ₹9,000 and Pet Care Tips ₹3,000 to ₹5,000. The band spans all three.
Grooming₹800 to ₹2,000 a sessionEvery 8 to 12 weeks, an interval we have estimated because no source states one. Inside Scroller gives ₹800 to ₹1,500 a session and Pets Worth Guide ₹1,500 to ₹2,000, with home grooming at ₹300 to ₹500 a month. The coat is low maintenance but sheds seasonally.
Puppy vaccinations₹3,000 to ₹8,000The full first-year course.
Starter accessories₹3,000 to ₹13,000Bed, crate, bowls, collar, leash and toys, once.

Food and grooming are this breed's own sourced figures. The other lines are the same for any dog and are sourced on the price calculator page.

Not in the figure

  • Spaying or neutering: about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 at a shelter or a subsidised clinic, and ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 privately, more for a big dog.
  • Training classes: about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for a first course, and far more for a guarding breed.
  • Air conditioning: a real cost for a thick-coated breed in the plains, which our sources price per breed rather than generally.
  • Anything that goes wrong: one night in intensive care runs ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 and a cruciate repair ₹1.2 to ₹1.8 lakh.

Adult size

How big a Kangal gets

Adult weight and height are the Federation Cynologique Internationale standard, quoted in the standard's own words below. The growth figures are our own calculation on a published veterinary growth standard, scaled to this breed's adult range.

The same growth engine drives our puppy weight calculator, which works in pounds. For a dog in the giant size class, weekly weight gain drops to almost nothing by about 13 months. Height finishes earlier than weight: this breed stands 65 cm to 78 cm at the shoulder when grown.

Indian climate

Suits the Indian climate

The FCI standard describes the breed as hard working and capable of enduring extremes of heat. Supertails writes that Kangals are highly adaptable and can thrive in India’s diverse climates with proper care, needing extra attention in hot and humid regions.

This is the one breed on these pages whose own standard says it handles heat. The FCI describes the Kangal as capable of enduring extremes of heat, which is what a livestock guardian from the Anatolian plateau would need.

That is not the same as saying it suits an Indian flat. This is a 48 to 60 kilogram independent guarding dog bred to work alone over open ground, and nothing in the standard suggests it belongs in a two-bedroom apartment in Mumbai.

Humidity is the gap in the heat tolerance. Supertails notes the breed needs extra attention in hot and humid regions, which covers most of coastal India.

Legal

The Kangal was named in the 2024 central advisory, which no longer stands.

The Kangal was named in the central advisory of 12 March 2024. The Karnataka High Court quashed that circular on 10 April 2024, the Delhi High Court set it aside in April 2024, and in January 2025 the Union government told the Bombay High Court it was not acting on it. Importing a dog is a separate question from keeping one, and import permits are handled by a different part of government again, so take advice before committing to an import.

Checked . This is a summary of the court reports and news listed at the foot of this page. It is not legal advice. The position can differ by state and by housing society, and a fresh central notification would change it again. The full list of breeds the circular named, and what each court did, is on the dog price page.

Buying

How to buy a Kangal responsibly

Verify what you are buying. With so few Kangals in India, a dog sold as one may be an Anatolian Shepherd, a cross, or something else entirely, and at these prices that matters.

If you are importing, the logistics are a second purchase. Budget the ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 our sources all give for shipping, permits and quarantine, and sort the paperwork before you pay for the dog.

Inside Scroller prices professional handler training at ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 and Pets Worth Guide treats training as non-negotiable for the breed. A guarding dog this size without training is not a pet, it is a liability.

The checks that apply to any puppy

  • See both parents, in the place they live. A puppy mill cannot offer you that, which is what makes it the most useful question you can ask.
  • Ask for the vaccination and deworming record with dates and what was given. The full first-year course runs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on our sources.
  • Check the KCI papers if you are paying for them. Both parents must be KCI-registered and carry KCI-approved microchips for a litter to be registrable, and the breeder must file within 90 days of the birth. Papers record parentage, not health.
  • Avoid a pet shop if you can. Supertails writes that many Indian pet shops source from puppy mills, and advises anyone who does buy from one to insist on the vaccination records and see a vet within 48 hours.
  • Consider a rescue. A shelter or indie rescue charges ₹0 to ₹2,000, often covering the first vaccination and the sterilisation.

FAQ

Kangal prices: the questions people ask

What is the Kangal dog price in India?
About ₹50,000 to ₹1,50,000 for a puppy bred from local stock, ₹1,00,000 to ₹2,50,000 with documented pedigree, and ₹1,20,000 to ₹3,50,000 for a direct Turkish import. Add ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 for import logistics on the last of those, on all three of our sources.
Why is the Kangal so expensive in India?
Scarcity and import costs. There is very little Kangal breeding in India, so most good dogs come in from Turkey or Europe, and the shipping, permits, quarantine and health certification alone run ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 on top of the dog.
Is the Kangal banned in India?
The Kangal was on the list in the central advisory of 12 March 2024, which the Karnataka High Court quashed and the Delhi High Court set aside, both in April 2024. In January 2025 the government told the Bombay High Court it was not acting on it. Import rules are a separate matter handled by a different authority, so if you plan to import, take proper advice. We are summarising reported court orders, not giving legal advice.
How big does a Kangal get?
The FCI standard gives 72 to 78 cm at the withers and 48 to 60 kg for males, and 65 to 73 cm and 40 to 50 kg for females, with 2 cm of tolerance on the heights. That is a bigger dog than a Rottweiler and taller than a Great Dane is heavy.
Can a Kangal live in an Indian city?
Its own standard says it endures extremes of heat, so climate is less of an obstacle than for a Husky. The obstacles are size, independence and a guarding instinct bred for working alone over open country. Our sources treat professional training as non-negotiable rather than optional.
How big does a Kangal get in kg?
39.9 to 59.9 kg as an adult, on the Federation Cynologique Internationale standard, which states it as Males: 48 to 60 kg. Females: 40 to 50 kg.. Height at the shoulder is 65 to 78 cm. Most of the weight gain is done by about 13 months for a dog in the giant size class.

India’s own breeds

Native alternatives of about this size

A Kangal runs 39.9 to 59.9 kg on the Federation Cynologique Internationale standard. One native breed of about that size, with the weight our sources actually measured, and the thing that usually decides it in India: whether the dog needs cooling.

Read the climate line on those cards before you take this as a recommendation. At this weight the only measured native breed we have is a Himalayan flock guardian, and our sources say it struggles on the plains. If you live anywhere hot, a native breed is not the easy answer at this size: the honest answer is a smaller dog.

Put any two of them side by side in the comparison tool, or see all fifteen native breeds, measured and unmeasured, on the breeds pages.
