Chihuahua full grown

A full grown Chihuahua weighs no more than 6 pounds and stands 5 to 8 inches at the shoulder. The AKC standard sets a ceiling rather than a range, and it does not divide the breed by size at all. Most Chihuahuas reach their adult weight by about nine or ten months.

Fair. Four to five months is the usual time to make this estimate. It is reasonable now, but the range is still wide.

In short

Key takeaways

  1. A full grown Chihuahua weighs 3 to 6 lb across all its sizes.
  2. The weight and height here come from the official breed standard.
  3. Most of the growing is done by about 10 months.
  4. A short coat keeps the grooming bill low.
  5. "teacup" is a seller's word, not a recognized size.

Timing

When a Chihuahua stops growing

In our figures, a dog in the toy size class has done almost all of its weight gain by about 10 months. After that the weekly gain drops below a quarter of a percent of adult weight, which is slow enough that you will not see it on the scales week to week.

Height finishes earlier than weight. The AKC puts small breeds at full size by 6 to 8 months, medium breeds at around 12 months, and giant breeds at 12 to 18 months, with some very large breeds taking up to 24.

Variation

Why individual Chihuahuas differ

The Chihuahua Club of America states that its standard "does not categorize the Chihuahua by size". There is one Chihuahua, in two coat types, long and smooth.

Size varies between individuals the way it does in any family. A 4 pound Chihuahua and a 7 pound one can come out of the same litter, and neither is a separate kind of dog.

Sales words

"teacup" is not a size

You will see Chihuahua puppies advertised as "teacup", "pocket size", "tiny toy", "miniature". None of those is a recognized variety in any registry.

The Chihuahua Club of America, writing about its own breed, lists “Teacup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard” as labels attached to the breed and calls them incorrect and misleading, used to make a puppy seem more valuable. The same reasoning applies wherever the words turn up.

A puppy sold under one of these labels grows up as an ordinary Chihuahua, usually at the light end of the range and sometimes not. The label tells you nothing useful about adult size. Your puppy's own weight does, which is what the calculator on this page uses.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big is a Chihuahua full grown?
3 to 6 pounds across every size this breed comes in, standing 5 to 8 inches at the shoulder. Those figures come from the breed standard.
How can I tell how big my Chihuahua puppy will get?
Weigh your puppy and enter its age in the calculator on this page. It is already set to the toy growth curve for this breed, so it works backwards from where your puppy is now rather than from the breed average. Four to six months is when the estimate is most reliable.
When does a Chihuahua stop growing?
Weight gain slows to almost nothing at around 10 months for a dog in the toy size class. Height finishes earlier than weight in every breed.
How big do Chihuahuas get?
The AKC standard caps the breed at 6 pounds, at 5 to 8 inches tall. Pet Chihuahuas frequently weigh more than that without anything being wrong.
Is a teacup Chihuahua a separate breed?
No. The Chihuahua Club of America names "Teacup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard" as labels attached to the breed and calls them incorrect and misleading, used to make a puppy appear more valuable. There is one Chihuahua.
How big will a teacup Chihuahua get?
It grows up as a Chihuahua. Some finish at 2 or 3 pounds and some at 6 or 7, and the seller's label tells you nothing about which. The calculator above uses your puppy's own weight, which does.
When do Chihuahuas stop growing?
Most are at adult weight by nine or ten months. The AKC puts small breeds at full size by 6 to 8 months, with a little more arriving slowly after that.

Method

How we calculate this

The adult weight and height come from the sources below. The shape of the growth chart comes from our own calculation on the open data behind a published veterinary growth standard, described on the how we calculate page. The charts are estimates built from a breed range and a population curve, not measurements of this breed.
