Fair. Four to five months is the usual time to make this estimate. It is reasonable now, but the range is still wide.

In short

Key takeaways

  1. A full grown French Bulldog weighs 18 to 28 lb across all its sizes.
  2. The weight and height here come from the official breed standard.
  3. Most of the growing is done by about 10 months.
  4. A short coat keeps the grooming bill low.
  5. "mini" is a seller's word, not a recognized size.

Timing

When a French Bulldog stops growing

In our figures, a dog in the medium size class has done almost all of its weight gain by about 10 months. After that the weekly gain drops below a quarter of a percent of adult weight, which is slow enough that you will not see it on the scales week to week.

Height finishes earlier than weight. The AKC puts small breeds at full size by 6 to 8 months, medium breeds at around 12 months, and giant breeds at 12 to 18 months, with some very large breeds taking up to 24.

Variation

Why individual French Bulldogs differ

A French Bulldog is heavy for its height. At 11 to 13 inches it weighs about as much as a dog several inches taller, because the build is so dense.

Weight matters more in this breed than in most. A flat-faced dog carrying extra weight has a harder time breathing and cooling, which is a reason to keep the vet involved rather than aiming at a number.

Sellers advertise "mini" and "teacup" Frenchies. The AKC standard has one size and no variety beneath it.

Sales words

"mini" is not a size

You will see French Bulldog puppies advertised as "mini", "teacup", "micro". None of those is a recognized variety in any registry.

The Chihuahua Club of America, writing about its own breed, lists “Teacup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard” as labels attached to the breed and calls them incorrect and misleading, used to make a puppy seem more valuable. The same reasoning applies wherever the words turn up.

A puppy sold under one of these labels grows up as an ordinary French Bulldog, usually at the light end of the range and sometimes not. The label tells you nothing useful about adult size. Your puppy's own weight does, which is what the calculator on this page uses.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big is a French Bulldog full grown?
18 to 28 pounds across every size this breed comes in, standing 11 to 13 inches at the shoulder. Those figures come from the breed standard.
How can I tell how big my French Bulldog puppy will get?
Weigh your puppy and enter its age in the calculator on this page. It is already set to the medium growth curve for this breed, so it works backwards from where your puppy is now rather than from the breed average. Four to six months is when the estimate is most reliable.
When does a French Bulldog stop growing?
Weight gain slows to almost nothing at around 10 months for a dog in the medium size class. Height finishes earlier than weight in every breed.
How much does a full grown French Bulldog weigh?
Under 28 pounds, by the AKC standard. Most pet Frenchies land between 20 and 28.
When is a French Bulldog full grown?
Around ten months for weight. Our figures put the medium size class at about 88 percent of adult weight at ten months.
Is a mini French Bulldog a real size?
No. The AKC recognizes one French Bulldog, capped at 28 pounds. Mini and teacup are sellers' words, and breeding for very low weight in a flat-faced breed adds risk rather than value.

Method

How we calculate this

The adult weight and height come from the sources below. The shape of the growth chart comes from our own calculation on the open data behind a published veterinary growth standard, described on the how we calculate page. The charts are estimates built from a breed range and a population curve, not measurements of this breed.
