Dachshund full grown

A full grown Standard Dachshund weighs 16 to 32 pounds and stands 8 to 9 inches at the shoulder. A Miniature Dachshund weighs 11 pounds and under at 5 to 6 inches. The two are the same breed, divided by weight at twelve months old.

Fair. Four to five months is the usual time to make this estimate. It is reasonable now, but the range is still wide.

Estimate only. For health questions, ask your vet. Mixed breeds can land outside the range.

In short

Key takeaways

  1. A full grown Dachshund weighs 8 to 32 lb across all its sizes.
  2. The weight and height here come from the official breed standard.
  3. Most of the growing is done by about 10 months.
  4. A short coat keeps the grooming bill low.
  5. The chart below shows a band, not a line, because individual dogs vary.

Timing

When a Dachshund stops growing

In our figures, a dog in the medium size class has done almost all of its weight gain by about 10 months. After that the weekly gain drops below a quarter of a percent of adult weight, which is slow enough that you will not see it on the scales week to week.

Height finishes earlier than weight. The AKC puts small breeds at full size by 6 to 8 months, medium breeds at around 12 months, and giant breeds at 12 to 18 months, with some very large breeds taking up to 24. In a breed with several sizes, the smaller variety finishes first: that is a size effect, not a breed one.

Variation

Why individual Dachshunds differ

The Dachshund is split by weight rather than height, and the split is made at twelve months. A dog at 12 to 15 pounds falls between the two varieties and is sometimes called a tweenie, which is not an official term.

The breed comes in three coat types, smooth, longhaired and wirehaired. Coat does not change the size, but a longhaired Dachshund needs more brushing.

A long back carries risk. Keeping a Dachshund at a lean weight matters more here than in most breeds, and that is a conversation for your vet.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big is a Dachshund full grown?
8 to 32 pounds across every size this breed comes in, standing 8 to 9 inches at the shoulder. Those figures come from the breed standard.
How can I tell how big my Dachshund puppy will get?
Weigh your puppy and enter its age in the calculator on this page. It is already set to the medium growth curve for this breed, so it works backwards from where your puppy is now rather than from the breed average. Four to six months is when the estimate is most reliable.
When does a Dachshund stop growing?
Weight gain slows to almost nothing at around 10 months for a dog in the medium size class. Height finishes earlier than weight in every breed.
How big is a mini Dachshund full grown?
11 pounds and under, at 5 to 6 inches at the shoulder. The AKC decides the variety by weight at twelve months, so a puppy is not formally a Miniature until then.
What is a tweenie Dachshund?
A dog that finishes between the two varieties, roughly 12 to 15 pounds. It is a convenient word among owners, not an AKC size. The registry recognizes Miniature and Standard only.
When does a Dachshund stop growing?
Around ten months for a Miniature and a little later for a Standard. The AKC uses twelve months as the point at which the variety is settled.

Method

How we calculate this

The adult weight and height come from the sources below. The shape of the growth chart comes from our own calculation on the open data behind a published veterinary growth standard, described on the how we calculate page. The charts are estimates built from a breed range and a population curve, not measurements of this breed.
