American Bully full grown

The American Bully is sorted by height, not weight. A Pocket male stands 14 to under 17 inches, a Standard 17 to 20 inches, and an XL over 20 inches up to 23 inches. The UKC standard sets no weight at all; published figures put adults between 30 and 85 pounds, with XLs going well above that.

Fair. Four to five months is the usual time to make this estimate. It is reasonable now, but the range is still wide.

In short

Key takeaways

  1. A full grown American Bully weighs 30 to 120 lb across all its sizes.
  2. The weight and height here come from the official breed standard.
  3. Most of the growing is done by about 13 months.
  4. A short coat keeps the grooming bill low.
  5. "micro" is a seller's word, not a recognized size.

Timing

When a American Bully stops growing

In our figures, a dog in the giant size class has done almost all of its weight gain by about 13 months. After that the weekly gain drops below a quarter of a percent of adult weight, which is slow enough that you will not see it on the scales week to week.

Height finishes earlier than weight. The AKC puts small breeds at full size by 6 to 8 months, medium breeds at around 12 months, and giant breeds at 12 to 18 months, with some very large breeds taking up to 24. In a breed with several sizes, the smaller variety finishes first: that is a size effect, not a breed one.

Sex

Male and female

The breed standard gives different figures for males and females, and they are in the tables above. In the growth data behind our calculator, a female of a given size class is also slightly further along toward her adult weight at any given age than a male, so telling the calculator which you have shifts the estimate by a few percent.

Variation

Why individual American Bullys differ

The UKC standard divides the breed by height at the withers and gives no weight figure for any variety. That is unusual, and it is why the weight bands on this page are marked as working estimates rather than verified figures.

All American Bullies are shown as Standard until they reach a year old, at which point they are separated into varieties. So a dog's variety is not settled until it has finished growing.

"Micro" and "XXL" are not UKC varieties. Micro is used for dogs under Pocket height and XXL for dogs above XL, and neither appears in the standard.

Sales words

"micro" is not a size

You will see American Bully puppies advertised as "micro", "XXL", "exotic". None of those is a recognized variety in any registry.

The Chihuahua Club of America, writing about its own breed, lists “Teacup, Pocket Size, Tiny Toy, Miniature or Standard” as labels attached to the breed and calls them incorrect and misleading, used to make a puppy seem more valuable. The same reasoning applies wherever the words turn up.

A puppy sold under one of these labels grows up as an ordinary American Bully, usually at the light end of the range and sometimes not. The label tells you nothing useful about adult size. Your puppy's own weight does, which is what the calculator on this page uses.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big is a American Bully full grown?
30 to 120 pounds across every size this breed comes in, standing 19 to 23 inches at the shoulder. Those figures come from the breed standard.
How can I tell how big my American Bully puppy will get?
Weigh your puppy and enter its age in the calculator on this page. It is already set to the giant growth curve for this breed, so it works backwards from where your puppy is now rather than from the breed average. Four to six months is when the estimate is most reliable.
When does a American Bully stop growing?
Weight gain slows to almost nothing at around 13 months for a dog in the giant size class, and the chest and frame keep filling out for months after that. Height finishes earlier than weight in every breed.
How big is a pocket bully full grown?
A Pocket male stands 14 inches to just under 17 at the shoulder, and a female 13 to just under 16. That is the UKC standard. The standard sets no weight, and published general figures put most Bullies between 30 and 85 pounds.
How big does an XL bully get?
Over 20 inches up to 23 inches for a male, and over 19 up to 22 for a female. Weight varies widely and is not part of the standard.
Is a micro bully a recognized size?
No. The UKC recognizes Pocket, Standard, Classic and XL. Micro is a seller's word for a dog under Pocket height, and it carries no official meaning.
When is an American Bully full grown?
The UKC itself treats a year as the dividing line, because dogs are only sorted into varieties at that age. Weight keeps climbing after that in the larger varieties.

Method

How we calculate this

The adult weight and height come from the sources below. The shape of the growth chart comes from our own calculation on the open data behind a published veterinary growth standard, described on the how we calculate page. The charts are estimates built from a breed range and a population curve, not measurements of this breed.
