Great Dane full grown

A full grown male Great Dane weighs 140 to 175 pounds and stands 30 to 32 inches at the shoulder. A female weighs 110 to 140 pounds at 28 to 30 inches. A Great Dane is still adding weight through its second year, later than any other common breed.

Fair. Four to five months is the usual time to make this estimate. It is reasonable now, but the range is still wide.

In short

Key takeaways

  1. A full grown Great Dane weighs 110 to 175 lb across all its sizes.
  2. The weight and height here come from the official breed standard.
  3. Most of the growing is done by about 13 months.
  4. A short coat keeps the grooming bill low.
  5. The chart below shows a band, not a line, because individual dogs vary.

Timing

When a Great Dane stops growing

In our figures, a dog in the giant size class has done almost all of its weight gain by about 13 months. After that the weekly gain drops below a quarter of a percent of adult weight, which is slow enough that you will not see it on the scales week to week.

Height finishes earlier than weight. The AKC puts small breeds at full size by 6 to 8 months, medium breeds at around 12 months, and giant breeds at 12 to 18 months, with some very large breeds taking up to 24.

Sex

Male and female

The breed standard gives different figures for males and females, and they are in the tables above. In the growth data behind our calculator, a female of a given size class is also slightly further along toward her adult weight at any given age than a male, so telling the calculator which you have shifts the estimate by a few percent.

Variation

Why individual Great Danes differ

The growth standard we use for the other size classes was built on dogs under 40 kg, which is about 88 pounds. A Great Dane is far above that, so its curve is drawn from the same open data but from the part the published paper did not model. We say so on the chart.

A Great Dane puppy can put on 2 or 3 pounds a week in its fastest months. That rate is also why feeding a giant-breed puppy is a veterinary question: growing too fast is a known risk to developing joints.

Height finishes well before weight. A Great Dane is usually close to its adult height at a year, and then spends the second year filling the frame.

FAQ

Questions people ask

How big is a Great Dane full grown?
110 to 175 pounds across every size this breed comes in, standing 28 to 32 inches at the shoulder. Those figures come from the breed standard.
How can I tell how big my Great Dane puppy will get?
Weigh your puppy and enter its age in the calculator on this page. It is already set to the giant growth curve for this breed, so it works backwards from where your puppy is now rather than from the breed average. Four to six months is when the estimate is most reliable.
When does a Great Dane stop growing?
Weight gain slows to almost nothing at around 13 months for a dog in the giant size class, and the chest and frame keep filling out for months after that. Height finishes earlier than weight in every breed.
How much does a full grown Great Dane weigh?
140 to 175 pounds for a male and 110 to 140 for a female, under the AKC standard. That is the heaviest breed on this site.
When is a Great Dane full grown?
Height at about a year, weight through the second year. The AKC notes that very large breeds such as Mastiffs may not reach full size until 24 months, and the Great Dane is in that group.
How accurate is a weight estimate for a Great Dane puppy?
Less accurate than for a small breed, because the published growth standard stops at 40 kg. Our giant-breed curve comes from the same open dataset but from outside the modelled range, and the calculator shows a wider range to match.

Method

How we calculate this

The adult weight and height come from the sources below. The shape of the growth chart comes from our own calculation on the open data behind a published veterinary growth standard, described on the how we calculate page. The charts are estimates built from a breed range and a population curve, not measurements of this breed.
