Indian climate
Suits the Indian climate
Poodles.in flags humidity rather than heat for this breed: the elongated body means more surface area than expected for a small dog, and the low ground clearance means the belly picks up moisture and dirt on walks in India’s humid climate. Inside Scroller carries spinal health supplements as a standing monthly cost instead.
The Dachshund was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory.

The price
Dachshund price by seller type
Who you buy from moves this price more than anything else does. Each row is the range our Indian sources state for that kind of seller, with the sources named in the notes column.
| Where from | Price in ₹ | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|
| Unregistered home breeder | ₹8,000 to ₹30,000 | What's The Cost puts a pet-quality Dachshund at ₹8,000 to ₹25,000, Poodles.in at ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 and Inside Scroller prices a basic standard smooth at ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 and a basic miniature at ₹25,000 to ₹40,000. |
| KCI-registered breeder | ₹20,000 to ₹60,000 | Inside Scroller gives ₹30,000 to ₹50,000 for a KCI-registered standard smooth and ₹35,000 to ₹60,000 for a KCI miniature, and says registration adds ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 to the base price. What's The Cost gives ₹20,000 to ₹37,500. |
| Show quality | ₹30,000 to ₹80,000 and up | A conformation prospect from a proven line. |
| Imported line | ₹90,000 to ₹1,20,000 | Brought in from abroad, before shipping and paperwork. |
| Pet shop | Not priced by breed | No source we found prices a pet-shop puppy breed by breed. One Indian source puts a breed puppy from a pet shop at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 across all breeds. |
| Shelter or indie rescue | ₹0 to ₹2,000 | Most shelters and indie rescues charge nothing, or a nominal ₹500 to ₹2,000 that often covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation. |

Variation
What changes a Dachshund's price
Coat type is the clearest price ladder of any breed on these pages. Inside Scroller prices a standard smooth at ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 basic, a long-haired at ₹30,000 to ₹65,000 and a wire-haired at ₹35,000 to ₹70,000, calling the wire-haired the rarest type in India.
Size is the other ladder. A miniature costs more than a standard at every tier on Inside Scroller, at ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 basic against ₹15,000 to ₹25,000, because metro demand for apartment-sized dogs is higher.
Inside Scroller prices KCI registration directly at ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 on top of the base price, one of only two breeds where a source does that.
City is a clean factor: ₹12,000 to ₹40,000 in tier 2 and tier 3 towns against ₹15,000 to ₹70,000 across the metros.
What does not change it
No source we read prices a Dachshund by age, so the calculator on this page has no age input. A puppy is priced as a puppy and an older dog is usually a rescue rather than a sale. No source states a price difference between the sexes in this breed either, so the calculator does not ask.

Running cost
What a Dachshund costs to keep
The calculator at the top of this page adds these up for you. The puppy price is not in the total: this is what the first year of keeping the dog costs on top of buying it.
| Line | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Food | ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 a month | Inside Scroller gives ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 and Poodles.in ₹1,200 to ₹1,800. |
| Grooming | ₹400 to ₹1,500 a month | Inside Scroller prices this monthly and says it depends on the coat: a smooth Dachshund needs very little, a long-haired or wire-haired one more. |
| Puppy vaccinations | ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 | The full first-year course. |
| Starter accessories | ₹3,000 to ₹13,000 | Bed, crate, bowls, collar, leash and toys, once. |
Food and grooming are this breed's own sourced figures. The other lines are the same for any dog and are sourced on the price calculator page.

Not in the figure
- Spaying or neutering: about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 at a shelter or a subsidised clinic, and ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 privately, more for a big dog.
- Training classes: about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for a first course, and far more for a guarding breed.
- Air conditioning: a real cost for a thick-coated breed in the plains, which our sources price per breed rather than generally.
- Anything that goes wrong: one night in intensive care runs ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 and a cruciate repair ₹1.2 to ₹1.8 lakh.
Adult size
How big a Dachshund gets
Adult weight and height are the American Kennel Club standard, quoted in the standard's own words below. The growth figures are our own calculation on a published veterinary growth standard, scaled to this breed's adult range.
- adult weight
- 3.6 to 14.5 kgadult weight
- height at the shoulder
- 13 to 23 cmheight at the shoulder
- life expectancy
- 12-16 yearslife expectancy
- Weight, as the American Kennel Club states it
- 16-32 pounds (standard), 11 pounds & under (miniature)
- Height, as the American Kennel Club states it
- 8-9 inches (standard), 5-6 inches (miniature)
The AKC standard recognises two sizes. The miniature is given as 11 pounds and under with no floor, so the 8 pound bottom of the range here is our own.

Estimated from the adult weight range above and the growth curve for the small size class. The band runs from the low end of the adult range to the high end, so your own dog sits somewhere inside it. These are estimates, not measurements of this breed.

The same growth engine drives our puppy weight calculator, which works in pounds. For a dog in the small size class, weekly weight gain drops to almost nothing by about 10 months. Height finishes earlier than weight: this breed stands 13 cm to 23 cm at the shoulder when grown.
The Dachshund handles Indian heat better than most breeds here. Our sources worry about the back and the belly instead.
Poodles.in notes the low ground clearance means the belly collects moisture and dirt on every walk, which in a humid Indian monsoon is a skin problem waiting to happen. Drying the underside properly after a wet walk is the specific job.
The spine is the lifelong management question. Inside Scroller carries spinal health supplements as a standing monthly line of ₹400 to ₹800, and stairs and jumping down from furniture are the things to control.

Buying
How to buy a Dachshund responsibly
Decide between standard and miniature before you shop, because they are priced differently and sold interchangeably.
Ask about back problems in the line. It is the breed’s defining health risk and a reasonable question for any breeder.
The checks that apply to any puppy
- See both parents, in the place they live. A puppy mill cannot offer you that, which is what makes it the most useful question you can ask.
- Ask for the vaccination and deworming record with dates and what was given. The full first-year course runs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on our sources.
- Check the KCI papers if you are paying for them. Both parents must be KCI-registered and carry KCI-approved microchips for a litter to be registrable, and the breeder must file within 90 days of the birth. Papers record parentage, not health.
- Avoid a pet shop if you can. Supertails writes that many Indian pet shops source from puppy mills, and advises anyone who does buy from one to insist on the vaccination records and see a vet within 48 hours.
- Consider a rescue. A shelter or indie rescue charges ₹0 to ₹2,000, often covering the first vaccination and the sterilisation.
FAQ
Dachshund prices: the questions people ask
- What is the Dachshund price in India?
- About ₹8,000 to ₹30,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹20,000 to ₹60,000 with KCI papers, across five Indian publishers. Show quality runs to ₹80,000 and imported lines to ₹1,20,000.
- Why is a miniature Dachshund more expensive than a standard one?
- Metro demand for apartment-sized dogs. Inside Scroller prices a basic miniature at ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 against ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 for a basic standard smooth, and calls the miniature apartment-friendly. It is the same breed in a smaller size, recognised by the AKC at 11 pounds and under.
- Which Dachshund coat is dearest in India?
- The wire-haired, at ₹35,000 to ₹70,000 on Inside Scroller, which calls it the rarest type in India. The long-haired follows at ₹30,000 to ₹65,000 and the smooth is the cheapest and most common.
- Are Dachshunds suited to Indian weather?
- Better than most. Our sources flag humidity rather than heat: the low belly collects moisture and dirt on walks, so drying the underside matters in the monsoon. The back, not the weather, is the breed’s real constraint.
- How much does a Dachshund cost per month in India?
- Inside Scroller gives ₹2,900 to ₹6,900 a month, with food at ₹1,200 to ₹2,500, grooming ₹400 to ₹1,500 depending on coat and spinal supplements carried as a line of their own.
- How big does a Dachshund get in kg?
- 3.6 to 14.5 kg as an adult, on the American Kennel Club standard, which states it as 16-32 pounds (standard), 11 pounds & under (miniature). Height at the shoulder is 13 to 23 cm. Most of the weight gain is done by about 10 months for a dog in the small size class.

India’s own breeds
Native alternatives of about this size
Nothing we could offer here honestly. A Dachshund is 3.6 to 14.5 kg on the American Kennel Club standard, and no native Indian breed with a published measurement is close enough in size for us to call it an alternative.
India’s small native dogs have never been formally measured. The Indian Spitz is the obvious candidate and it has no registry descriptor and no characterization study we could find; the Indie is a landrace with no standard at all. There are weights for both on pages that sell puppies, and we are not going to set one of those beside a kennel club standard as though the two were the same kind of claim.
The native breeds pages list all fifteen, measured and unmeasured, and say which is which.
