Indian climate

Needs active cooling in summer

Poodles.in says the Lhasa Apso’s long, heavy coat mats severely in India’s humid conditions, and that a floor-length coat bred for Tibetan monasteries now faces monsoon moisture, Indian dust and tropical temperatures. Inside Scroller adds that the coat must be dried completely to the skin after any bath to prevent bacterial and yeast infections.

The Lhasa Apso was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory.

The price

Lhasa Apso price by seller type

Who you buy from moves this price more than anything else does. Each row is the range our Indian sources state for that kind of seller, with the sources named in the notes column.

Where fromPrice in ₹What the sources say
Unregistered home breeder₹10,000 to ₹35,000What's The Cost puts a pet-quality Lhasa at ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 and Supertails at ₹15,000 to ₹30,000. Inside Scroller's city rows start at ₹14,000.
KCI-registered breeder₹20,000 to ₹50,000 and upInside Scroller gives ₹30,000 to ₹50,000 and up for KCI-registered show quality and What's The Cost ₹20,000 to ₹37,500. Supertails says KCI-registered puppies with documented ancestry typically cost ₹25,000 to ₹80,000.
Show quality₹30,000 to ₹60,000A conformation prospect from a proven line.
Imported line₹90,000 to ₹1,20,000Brought in from abroad, before shipping and paperwork.
Pet shopNot priced by breedNo source we found prices a pet-shop puppy breed by breed. One Indian source puts a breed puppy from a pet shop at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 across all breeds.
Shelter or indie rescue₹0 to ₹2,000Most shelters and indie rescues charge nothing, or a nominal ₹500 to ₹2,000 that often covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation.

Variation

What changes a Lhasa Apso's price

This is one of the cheapest long-coated breeds in India, and Inside Scroller says so directly. A Shih Tzu or a Maltese of similar size and coat costs more.

Papers roughly double the price at the pet end, from ₹10,000 to ₹35,000 unregistered to ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 registered.

Females are priced ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 above males on Inside Scroller.

City is a clean factor: ₹10,000 to ₹28,000 in tier 2 and tier 3 towns against ₹14,000 to ₹48,000 across the metros.

What does not change it

No source we read prices a Lhasa Apso by age, so the calculator on this page has no age input. A puppy is priced as a puppy and an older dog is usually a rescue rather than a sale. No source states a price difference between the sexes in this breed either, so the calculator does not ask.

What a Lhasa Apso costs to keep

The calculator at the top of this page adds these up for you. The puppy price is not in the total: this is what the first year of keeping the dog costs on top of buying it.

Not in the figure

  • Spaying or neutering: about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 at a shelter or a subsidised clinic, and ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 privately, more for a big dog.
  • Training classes: about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for a first course, and far more for a guarding breed.
  • Air conditioning: a real cost for a thick-coated breed in the plains, which our sources price per breed rather than generally.
  • Anything that goes wrong: one night in intensive care runs ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 and a cruciate repair ₹1.2 to ₹1.8 lakh.

Adult size

How big a Lhasa Apso gets

Adult weight and height are the American Kennel Club standard, quoted in the standard's own words below. The growth figures are our own calculation on a published veterinary growth standard, scaled to this breed's adult range.

The AKC standard gives the female height only as slightly smaller than the male, so the 9 inch bottom of the range here is our own reading of that wording.

The same growth engine drives our puppy weight calculator, which works in pounds. For a dog in the small size class, weekly weight gain drops to almost nothing by about 10 months. Height finishes earlier than weight: this breed stands 23 cm to 28 cm at the shoulder when grown.

The coat is the whole story. Poodles.in says it mats severely in Indian humidity, and the breed was developed for Tibetan monasteries rather than for a Chennai summer.

Drying matters as much as washing. Inside Scroller is specific: the dense coat must be dried completely to the skin after any bath, or bacterial and yeast infections follow in Indian conditions.

Daily brushing of ten to fifteen minutes is the minimum Inside Scroller gives to prevent matting, on top of a groomer every four to six weeks.

Many Indian owners keep the coat short. It is a practical choice and it reduces the daily work more than it reduces the bill.

Buying

How to buy a Lhasa Apso responsibly

Decide about the coat before you buy. A full Lhasa coat in Indian humidity is a daily commitment; a short clip is not a failure.

Lhasa Apsos and Shih Tzus are routinely confused and sometimes mis-sold. Ask for the pedigree if the price is at the registered end.

The checks that apply to any puppy

  • See both parents, in the place they live. A puppy mill cannot offer you that, which is what makes it the most useful question you can ask.
  • Ask for the vaccination and deworming record with dates and what was given. The full first-year course runs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on our sources.
  • Check the KCI papers if you are paying for them. Both parents must be KCI-registered and carry KCI-approved microchips for a litter to be registrable, and the breeder must file within 90 days of the birth. Papers record parentage, not health.
  • Avoid a pet shop if you can. Supertails writes that many Indian pet shops source from puppy mills, and advises anyone who does buy from one to insist on the vaccination records and see a vet within 48 hours.
  • Consider a rescue. A shelter or indie rescue charges ₹0 to ₹2,000, often covering the first vaccination and the sterilisation.

FAQ

Lhasa Apso prices: the questions people ask

What is the Lhasa Apso price in India?
About ₹10,000 to ₹35,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 with KCI papers, across five Indian publishers. Show lines run to ₹60,000.
How much does Lhasa Apso grooming cost in India?
₹1,000 to ₹3,000 a session across our two sources, needed every four to six weeks, plus ₹400 to ₹800 a month in home grooming supplies on Inside Scroller. Over a year the grooming usually costs more than the puppy did.
Does a Lhasa Apso suit Indian weather?
The coat is the problem rather than the dog. Poodles.in says it mats severely in India’s humid conditions and faces monsoon moisture and dust. Inside Scroller insists the coat be dried completely to the skin after every bath. A shorter clip makes the breed considerably more practical here.
Lhasa Apso or Shih Tzu?
They look similar and are priced similarly, with the Lhasa slightly cheaper on our sources at ₹10,000 to ₹35,000 unregistered against ₹10,000 to ₹35,000 for a Shih Tzu but lower at the registered end. The Lhasa is the more independent and watchful of the two; the Shih Tzu is the more openly affectionate.
How much does a Lhasa Apso cost per month in India?
Inside Scroller gives ₹4,000 to ₹10,000 a month and names grooming as the major cost, with food at ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 and eye and kidney monitoring folded into the annual vet figure.
How big does a Lhasa Apso get in kg?
5.4 to 8.2 kg as an adult, on the American Kennel Club standard, which states it as 12-18 pounds. Height at the shoulder is 23 to 28 cm. Most of the weight gain is done by about 10 months for a dog in the small size class.

India’s own breeds

Native alternatives of about this size

Nothing we could offer here honestly. A Lhasa Apso is 5.4 to 8.2 kg on the American Kennel Club standard, and no native Indian breed with a published measurement is close enough in size for us to call it an alternative.

India’s small native dogs have never been formally measured. The Indian Spitz is the obvious candidate and it has no registry descriptor and no characterization study we could find; the Indie is a landrace with no standard at all. There are weights for both on pages that sell puppies, and we are not going to set one of those beside a kennel club standard as though the two were the same kind of claim.

The native breeds pages list all fifteen, measured and unmeasured, and say which is which.
