Shih Tzu Price in India (2026)

A Shih Tzu puppy in India costs about ₹10,000 to ₹35,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 from a KCI-registered one, with show lines at ₹60,000 to ₹90,000. In Delhi NCR

₹10,000 to ₹85,000

Delhi NCR is a metro. Across the metro cities our sources name, a Shih Tzu runs ₹10,000 to ₹85,000. That is the general market across seller types, not the figure for one seller.

Inside Scroller’s metro rows run ₹10,000 to ₹55,000. Supertails goes higher, giving Mumbai ₹25,000 to ₹85,000 and Bengaluru ₹25,000 to ₹80,000.

Indian climate

Needs active cooling in summer

Supertails writes that a Shih Tzu can safely use air-conditioned rooms and benefits from temperature control given its flat-faced structure. The long coat and the short muzzle are both working against the dog in an Indian summer.

The Shih Tzu was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory.

The price

Shih Tzu price by seller type

Who you buy from moves this price more than anything else does. Each row is the range our Indian sources state for that kind of seller, with the sources named in the notes column.

Where fromPrice in ₹What the sources say
Unregistered home breeder₹10,000 to ₹35,000Supertails gives ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 for pet quality and Inside Scroller’s range starts at ₹10,000. Aruani Pet Stop is higher at ₹25,000 to ₹55,000.
KCI-registered breeder₹30,000 to ₹60,000Supertails gives ₹35,000 to ₹60,000 and Inside Scroller ₹30,000 to ₹55,000 and up. Mr n Mrs Pet states ₹35,000 to ₹1,20,000 and up.
Show quality₹60,000 to ₹90,000 and upA conformation prospect from a proven line.
Pet shopNot priced by breedNo source we found prices a pet-shop puppy breed by breed. One Indian source puts a breed puppy from a pet shop at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 across all breeds.
Shelter or indie rescue₹0 to ₹2,000Most shelters and indie rescues charge nothing, or a nominal ₹500 to ₹2,000 that often covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation.

Variation

What changes a Shih Tzu's price

"Imperial" is a sales word. Inside Scroller warns that very small Shih Tzus marketed as Imperial at premium prices often have significant health problems, and Supertails prices a "teacup" variant at ₹40,000 to ₹1,20,000. No registry recognises either label: the AKC standard is 9 to 16 pounds and stops there.

Papers roughly double the price at the pet end, from ₹10,000 to ₹35,000 unregistered to ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 registered.

Imported champion pedigrees command ₹40,000 and up on Inside Scroller.

Females are priced ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 above males on Inside Scroller.

The city spread is wide and the sources disagree about the top of it: Inside Scroller caps the metros at ₹55,000 while Supertails gives ₹85,000 for Mumbai.

What does not change it

No source we read prices a Shih Tzu by age, so the calculator on this page has no age input. A puppy is priced as a puppy and an older dog is usually a rescue rather than a sale. Sex does change the price in this breed, and the figure above is what a source states for it.

Running cost

What a Shih Tzu costs to keep

The calculator at the top of this page adds these up for you. The puppy price is not in the total: this is what the first year of keeping the dog costs on top of buying it.

LineFigureWhat it is
Food₹1,500 to ₹3,500 a monthSupertails gives ₹1,500 to ₹3,500 and Inside Scroller ₹1,500 to ₹3,000.
Grooming₹1,200 to ₹2,500 a sessionEvery 4 to 6 weeks. Inside Scroller prices a full coat and trim at ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 and calls grooming one of the most significant ongoing costs of the breed. Supertails gives ₹800 to ₹2,000 a month. A shorter puppy cut is easier to keep but still needs professional trimming.
Puppy vaccinations₹3,000 to ₹8,000The full first-year course.
Starter accessories₹3,000 to ₹13,000Bed, crate, bowls, collar, leash and toys, once.

Food and grooming are this breed's own sourced figures. The other lines are the same for any dog and are sourced on the price calculator page.

Not in the figure

  • Spaying or neutering: about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 at a shelter or a subsidised clinic, and ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 privately, more for a big dog.
  • Training classes: about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for a first course, and far more for a guarding breed.
  • Air conditioning: a real cost for a thick-coated breed in the plains, which our sources price per breed rather than generally.
  • Anything that goes wrong: one night in intensive care runs ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 and a cruciate repair ₹1.2 to ₹1.8 lakh.

The same growth engine drives our puppy weight calculator, which works in pounds. For a dog in the small size class, weekly weight gain drops to almost nothing by about 10 months. Height finishes earlier than weight: this breed stands 23 cm to 27 cm at the shoulder when grown.

Indian climate

Needs active cooling in summer

Supertails writes that a Shih Tzu can safely use air-conditioned rooms and benefits from temperature control given its flat-faced structure. The long coat and the short muzzle are both working against the dog in an Indian summer.

A Shih Tzu has two problems in an Indian summer at once: a long coat that holds heat and a short muzzle that makes panting less efficient. Supertails recommends temperature control for exactly that reason.

Many owners solve the coat with a short puppy cut. Inside Scroller says it is easier to maintain but still needs professional trimming, so it reduces the brushing rather than the bill.

Grooming is the defining cost of this breed. At ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 every four to six weeks, the grooming bill over a year can exceed what an unregistered puppy cost in the first place. The calculator on this page works that out for you.

Legal

Buying

How to buy a Shih Tzu responsibly

Decide about the coat before you buy, not after. A full Shih Tzu coat in Indian humidity is a commitment of daily brushing plus a groomer every month; a puppy cut is cheaper in time and not much cheaper in money.

Avoid the Imperial and teacup labels. Both our sources treat them as premium pricing on a health risk.

The checks that apply to any puppy

  • See both parents, in the place they live. A puppy mill cannot offer you that, which is what makes it the most useful question you can ask.
  • Ask for the vaccination and deworming record with dates and what was given. The full first-year course runs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on our sources.
  • Check the KCI papers if you are paying for them. Both parents must be KCI-registered and carry KCI-approved microchips for a litter to be registrable, and the breeder must file within 90 days of the birth. Papers record parentage, not health.
  • Avoid a pet shop if you can. Supertails writes that many Indian pet shops source from puppy mills, and advises anyone who does buy from one to insist on the vaccination records and see a vet within 48 hours.
  • Consider a rescue. A shelter or indie rescue charges ₹0 to ₹2,000, often covering the first vaccination and the sterilisation.

FAQ

Shih Tzu prices: the questions people ask

What is the price of a Shih Tzu in India?
About ₹10,000 to ₹35,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 with KCI papers, with show lines at ₹60,000 to ₹90,000. Three Indian sources agree closely on the registered figure.
What is an Imperial Shih Tzu and does it cost more?
It is a seller’s label for an unusually small dog, not a recognised variety. Inside Scroller warns that Imperial Shih Tzus marketed at premium prices often have significant health problems, and Supertails prices a teacup variant at ₹40,000 to ₹1,20,000. The AKC standard is simply 9 to 16 pounds.
How much does Shih Tzu grooming cost in India?
Inside Scroller prices a full coat and trim at ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 a session, needed every four to six weeks, and calls grooming one of the most significant ongoing costs of owning the breed. Supertails gives ₹800 to ₹2,000 a month. Over a year that is often more than the puppy cost.
Is a Shih Tzu a good breed for Indian weather?
It needs help. Supertails recommends temperature control because of the flat-faced structure, and the long coat adds to the problem. A cool room through the summer and a sensible coat length are both part of keeping one here.
Which is cheaper over a year, a Shih Tzu or a Pug?
On our sources the Pug is cheaper to buy and the Shih Tzu is dearer to groom, so it depends on the year. Inside Scroller puts a Pug at ₹4,000 to ₹10,000 a month and a Shih Tzu at ₹5,000 to ₹12,000, with grooming the reason for the gap. The calculator on this page lets you compare the two properly.
How big does a Shih Tzu get in kg?
4.1 to 7.3 kg as an adult, on the American Kennel Club standard, which states it as 9-16 pounds. Height at the shoulder is 23 to 27 cm. Most of the weight gain is done by about 10 months for a dog in the small size class.

India’s own breeds

Native alternatives of about this size

Nothing we could offer here honestly. A Shih Tzu is 4.1 to 7.3 kg on the American Kennel Club standard, and no native Indian breed with a published measurement is close enough in size for us to call it an alternative.

India’s small native dogs have never been formally measured. The Indian Spitz is the obvious candidate and it has no registry descriptor and no characterization study we could find; the Indie is a landrace with no standard at all. There are weights for both on pages that sell puppies, and we are not going to set one of those beside a kennel club standard as though the two were the same kind of claim.

The native breeds pages list all fifteen, measured and unmeasured, and say which is which.
