International siteMaltese Price in India (2026)
A Maltese puppy in India costs about ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹32,000 to ₹80,000 with KCI papers, with show lines to ₹1,00,000. The coat is the running cost and the Indian climate is hard on it: Poodles.in says dust, pollution and monsoon mud stain the white fur quickly and that fine hair tangles faster in humid air.

Needs active cooling in summer
Poodles.in says that in India dust, pollution and monsoon mud quickly stain the Maltese’s white coat, requiring frequent bathing and coat protection, and that its fine hair tangles faster in humid air than in drier climates. Daily eye-area cleaning is part of the routine on the same sources.
The Maltese was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory.

The price
Maltese price by seller type
Who you buy from moves this price more than anything else does. Each row is the range our Indian sources state for that kind of seller, with the sources named in the notes column.
| Where from | Price in ₹ | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|
| Unregistered home breeder | ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 | What's The Cost puts a pet-quality Maltese at ₹15,000 to ₹40,000. Inside Scroller will not price the breed below ₹28,000 and Poodles.in gives ₹25,000 to ₹80,000 for it as a whole, so this is the cheapest end anyone describes. |
| KCI-registered breeder | ₹32,000 to ₹80,000 and up | Inside Scroller gives ₹50,000 to ₹80,000 and up for KCI-registered show quality and What's The Cost ₹32,000 to ₹60,000 for KCI registration. Wrap In Fur prices the breed at ₹25,000 to ₹80,000. |
| Show quality | ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 | A conformation prospect from a proven line. |
| Imported line | ₹1,50,000 to ₹2,00,000 | Brought in from abroad, before shipping and paperwork. |
| Pet shop | Not priced by breed | No source we found prices a pet-shop puppy breed by breed. One Indian source puts a breed puppy from a pet shop at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 across all breeds. |
| Shelter or indie rescue | ₹0 to ₹2,000 | Most shelters and indie rescues charge nothing, or a nominal ₹500 to ₹2,000 that often covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation. |
Every figure read on 14 October 2026. Where two sources disagree, the range spans both and the note says which said what.

Variation
What changes a Maltese's price
Purity documentation matters unusually much in this breed. Inside Scroller warns buyers to be careful of Maltipoos and other crosses sold as purebred Maltese and to always ask for pedigree documentation.
Papers roughly double the price, from ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 unregistered to ₹32,000 to ₹80,000 registered.
Females are priced ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 above males on Inside Scroller.
City is a clean factor: ₹22,000 to ₹45,000 in tier 2 and tier 3 towns against ₹28,000 to ₹75,000 across the metros.
What does not change it
No source we read prices a Maltese by age, so the calculator on this page has no age input. A puppy is priced as a puppy and an older dog is usually a rescue rather than a sale. No source states a price difference between the sexes in this breed either, so the calculator does not ask.

What a Maltese costs to keep
The calculator at the top of this page adds these up for you. The puppy price is not in the total: this is what the first year of keeping the dog costs on top of buying it.
| Line | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Food | ₹1,200 to ₹3,000 a month | Inside Scroller gives ₹1,500 to ₹3,000, calling quality nutrition essential for coat health, and Poodles.in ₹1,200 to ₹1,800. |
| Grooming | ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 a session | Every 4 to 6 weeks. Every four to six weeks, plus ₹600 to ₹1,200 a month in home grooming supplies on the same source. Inside Scroller notes many Indian owners choose a shorter puppy cut, which reduces the daily brushing but not the professional visits. |
| Puppy vaccinations | ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 | The full first-year course. |
| Starter accessories | ₹3,000 to ₹13,000 | Bed, crate, bowls, collar, leash and toys, once. |
Food and grooming are this breed's own sourced figures. The other lines are the same for any dog and are sourced on the price calculator page.

Not in the figure
- Spaying or neutering: about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 at a shelter or a subsidised clinic, and ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 privately, more for a big dog.
- Training classes: about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for a first course, and far more for a guarding breed.
- Air conditioning: a real cost for a thick-coated breed in the plains, which our sources price per breed rather than generally.
- Anything that goes wrong: one night in intensive care runs ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 and a cruciate repair ₹1.2 to ₹1.8 lakh.
Adult size
How big a Maltese gets
Adult weight and height are the American Kennel Club standard, quoted in the standard's own words below. The growth figures are our own calculation on a published veterinary growth standard, scaled to this breed's adult range.
- adult weight

- height at the shoulder

- life expectancy

- Weight, as the American Kennel Club states it

The AKC standard sets a ceiling and no floor: under 7 pounds. The 3 pound bottom of the range here is our own. Wrap In Fur puts the breed’s life expectancy at 12 to 15 years, but we did not find it on the AKC standard page.

The same growth engine drives our puppy weight calculator, which works in pounds. For a dog in the toy size class, weekly weight gain drops to almost nothing by about 10 months. Height finishes earlier than weight: this breed stands 18 cm to 23 cm at the shoulder when grown.
Indian climate
Needs active cooling in summer
Poodles.in says that in India dust, pollution and monsoon mud quickly stain the Maltese’s white coat, requiring frequent bathing and coat protection, and that its fine hair tangles faster in humid air than in drier climates. Daily eye-area cleaning is part of the routine on the same sources.
A white floor-length coat in an Indian city is a maintenance problem before it is a heat problem. Poodles.in names dust, pollution and monsoon mud specifically, and says the fine hair tangles faster in humid air.
Grooming is the defining cost at ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 every four to six weeks, plus home supplies. Over a year that routinely exceeds what an unregistered puppy cost.
The eye area needs daily attention, and tear staining shows badly on a white coat.
A puppy cut is the practical Indian answer and Inside Scroller says many owners here choose it.

Buying
How to buy a Maltese responsibly
Ask for pedigree documentation, which Inside Scroller flags specifically because crosses are sold as purebred Maltese in this market.
Decide about the coat before you buy. Full length is a daily job in Indian conditions.
The checks that apply to any puppy
- See both parents, in the place they live. A puppy mill cannot offer you that, which is what makes it the most useful question you can ask.
- Ask for the vaccination and deworming record with dates and what was given. The full first-year course runs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on our sources.
- Check the KCI papers if you are paying for them. Both parents must be KCI-registered and carry KCI-approved microchips for a litter to be registrable, and the breeder must file within 90 days of the birth. Papers record parentage, not health.
- Avoid a pet shop if you can. Supertails writes that many Indian pet shops source from puppy mills, and advises anyone who does buy from one to insist on the vaccination records and see a vet within 48 hours.
- Consider a rescue. A shelter or indie rescue charges ₹0 to ₹2,000, often covering the first vaccination and the sterilisation.
FAQ
Maltese prices: the questions people ask
- What is the Maltese price in India?
- About ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹32,000 to ₹80,000 with KCI papers, across six Indian publishers. Show lines run to ₹1,00,000 and imports to ₹2,00,000.
- How much does Maltese grooming cost in India?
- ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 a session every four to six weeks on Inside Scroller, plus ₹600 to ₹1,200 a month in home grooming supplies. It is one of the most grooming-intensive breeds on these pages.
- Is a Maltese suited to the Indian climate?
- The dog copes; the coat struggles. Poodles.in says dust, pollution and monsoon mud stain the white fur quickly and that fine hair tangles faster in humid air. A shorter puppy cut makes the breed considerably more practical here.
- How do I know a Maltese is purebred?
- Ask for pedigree documentation. Inside Scroller specifically warns that Maltipoos and other crossbreeds are sold as purebred Maltese in the Indian market, and at ₹50,000 and up for a registered dog the difference matters.
- How much does a Maltese cost per month in India?
- Inside Scroller gives ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 a month and names grooming as the major recurring cost, with food at ₹1,500 to ₹3,000.
- How big does a Maltese get in kg?
- 1.4 to 3.2 kg as an adult, on the American Kennel Club standard, which states it as under 7 pounds. Height at the shoulder is 18 to 23 cm. Most of the weight gain is done by about 10 months for a dog in the toy size class.

India’s own breeds
Native alternatives of about this size
Nothing we could offer here honestly. A Maltese is 1.4 to 3.2 kg on the American Kennel Club standard, and no native Indian breed with a published measurement is close enough in size for us to call it an alternative.
India’s small native dogs have never been formally measured. The Indian Spitz is the obvious candidate and it has no registry descriptor and no characterization study we could find; the Indie is a landrace with no standard at all. There are weights for both on pages that sell puppies, and we are not going to set one of those beside a kennel club standard as though the two were the same kind of claim.
The native breeds pages list all fifteen, measured and unmeasured, and say which is which.
