Poodles.in says that in India’s heat the Great Dane’s short coat handles summer reasonably well, and points to skin folds rather than the coat as the thing to watch. The breed’s real constraints here are bloat risk, joints and the sheer cost of feeding it.
The Great Dane was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory, despite its German name translating as German Mastiff. The list’s open-ended "Mastiffs" entry named no breed.

The price
Great Dane price by seller type
Who you buy from moves this price more than anything else does. Each row is the range our Indian sources state for that kind of seller, with the sources named in the notes column.
| Where from | Price in ₹ | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|
| Unregistered home breeder | ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 | What's The Cost puts a pet-quality Great Dane at ₹15,000 to ₹40,000, Poodles.in at ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 and Aruani Pet Stop gives ₹30,000 to ₹80,000 for the breed as a whole. |
| KCI-registered breeder | ₹32,000 to ₹80,000 | What's The Cost gives ₹32,000 to ₹60,000 for KCI registration. Wrap In Fur prices the breed at ₹25,000 to ₹70,000 and the Supertails price list at ₹20,000 to ₹80,000. |
| Show quality | ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 | A conformation prospect from a proven line. |
| Imported line | ₹1,80,000 to ₹2,40,000 | Brought in from abroad, before shipping and paperwork. |
| Pet shop | Not priced by breed | No source we found prices a pet-shop puppy breed by breed. One Indian source puts a breed puppy from a pet shop at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 across all breeds. |
| Shelter or indie rescue | ₹0 to ₹2,000 | Most shelters and indie rescues charge nothing, or a nominal ₹500 to ₹2,000 that often covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation. |

Variation
What changes a Great Dane's price
The purchase price is low for a giant breed because Great Danes have been bred in India for a long time and the unregistered market is large.
Papers roughly double it: ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 unregistered against ₹32,000 to ₹60,000 registered on What’s The Cost.
The running cost is where the money actually goes. Aruani Pet Stop puts the monthly total at ₹10,000 to ₹18,000, the highest of any breed it prices, and it is mostly food.
No Indian source we found prices a Great Dane city by city, so the calculator shows the national range wherever you are.
What does not change it
No source we read prices a Great Dane by age, so the calculator on this page has no age input. A puppy is priced as a puppy and an older dog is usually a rescue rather than a sale. No source states a price difference between the sexes in this breed either, so the calculator does not ask.

What a Great Dane costs to keep
The calculator at the top of this page adds these up for you. The puppy price is not in the total: this is what the first year of keeping the dog costs on top of buying it.
| Line | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Food | ₹3,000 to ₹12,000 a month | Poodles.in gives ₹3,000 to ₹4,500 for food alone. Aruani Pet Stop gives ₹10,000 to ₹18,000 as the whole monthly cost and Wrap In Fur ₹6,000 to ₹12,000, so the top of this band is a ceiling rather than a food figure. |
| Grooming | ₹1,200 to ₹1,950 a month | The coat is short. Poodles.in notes that the sheer surface area of a giant dog makes the volume of loose hair add up and the job take longer. |
| Puppy vaccinations | ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 | The full first-year course. |
| Starter accessories | ₹3,000 to ₹13,000 | Bed, crate, bowls, collar, leash and toys, once. |
Food and grooming are this breed's own sourced figures. The other lines are the same for any dog and are sourced on the price calculator page.

Not in the figure
- Spaying or neutering: about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 at a shelter or a subsidised clinic, and ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 privately, more for a big dog.
- Training classes: about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for a first course, and far more for a guarding breed.
- Air conditioning: a real cost for a thick-coated breed in the plains, which our sources price per breed rather than generally.
- Anything that goes wrong: one night in intensive care runs ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 and a cruciate repair ₹1.2 to ₹1.8 lakh.
Adult size
How big a Great Dane gets
Adult weight and height are the American Kennel Club standard, quoted in the standard's own words below. The growth figures are our own calculation on a published veterinary growth standard, scaled to this breed's adult range.

Wrap In Fur puts the breed’s life expectancy at 7 to 10 years, which is typical for a giant breed, but we did not find it stated on the AKC standard page so it is not given above.

The same growth engine drives our puppy weight calculator, which works in pounds. For a dog in the giant size class, weekly weight gain drops to almost nothing by about 13 months. Height finishes earlier than weight: this breed stands 71 cm to 81 cm at the shoulder when grown.
Indian climate
Suits the Indian climate
Poodles.in says that in India’s heat the Great Dane’s short coat handles summer reasonably well, and points to skin folds rather than the coat as the thing to watch. The breed’s real constraints here are bloat risk, joints and the sheer cost of feeding it.
Among the giant breeds, this is the one our sources are least worried about in Indian heat. The coat is short and Poodles.in says it handles summer reasonably well.
Skin folds are the thing to check rather than the coat, especially through the monsoon.
Bloat is the emergency to understand before you buy. It is the classic deep-chested giant-breed risk, it moves fast, and knowing which vet near you can operate at night is a reasonable thing to arrange in advance.
Joints need protecting through the growth period, which in a dog this size is long and expensive to get wrong.
Legal
Legal status
The Great Dane was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory, despite its German name translating as German Mastiff. The list’s open-ended "Mastiffs" entry named no breed.
For what the 2024 advisory was and what the courts did with it, see the dog price page. Checked . Not legal advice.
Buying
How to buy a Great Dane responsibly
Budget the food, not the puppy. On our sources a Great Dane costs more per month than any breed except the Tibetan Mastiff, and it will do so for its whole life.
Ask about heart and hip screening in the parents.
Think about the lifespan honestly. Giant breeds are short-lived, and Wrap In Fur puts this one at 7 to 10 years.
The checks that apply to any puppy
- See both parents, in the place they live. A puppy mill cannot offer you that, which is what makes it the most useful question you can ask.
- Ask for the vaccination and deworming record with dates and what was given. The full first-year course runs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on our sources.
- Check the KCI papers if you are paying for them. Both parents must be KCI-registered and carry KCI-approved microchips for a litter to be registrable, and the breeder must file within 90 days of the birth. Papers record parentage, not health.
- Avoid a pet shop if you can. Supertails writes that many Indian pet shops source from puppy mills, and advises anyone who does buy from one to insist on the vaccination records and see a vet within 48 hours.
- Consider a rescue. A shelter or indie rescue charges ₹0 to ₹2,000, often covering the first vaccination and the sterilisation.
FAQ
Great Dane prices: the questions people ask
- What is the Great Dane price in India?
- About ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹32,000 to ₹80,000 with KCI papers, across five Indian publishers. Show quality runs to ₹1,20,000.
- Why is a Great Dane cheap to buy and expensive to keep?
- Because supply is good and the dog is enormous. The breed has been bred in India for decades so puppies are easy to find, while Aruani Pet Stop puts the monthly cost at ₹10,000 to ₹18,000, the highest figure in its table, almost all of it food.
- Can a Great Dane handle Indian summers?
- Better than most giant breeds. Poodles.in says the short coat handles summer reasonably well and points to skin folds rather than the coat as the thing to watch. Shade, water and sensible walk timing still apply.
- Is a Great Dane suitable for an Indian flat?
- The exercise need is moderate for its size, which surprises people, but the dog is 28 to 32 inches at the shoulder and will take up a room. The practical limits are usually the lift, the society rules and the floor space rather than the dog’s energy.
- How long does a Great Dane live?
- Wrap In Fur puts it at 7 to 10 years. We did not find a figure on the AKC standard page, so we have not stated one as a standard figure, but giant breeds are consistently short-lived.
- How big does a Great Dane get in kg?
- 49.9 to 79.4 kg as an adult, on the American Kennel Club standard, which states it as 140-175 pounds (male), 110-140 pounds (female). Height at the shoulder is 71 to 81 cm. Most of the weight gain is done by about 13 months for a dog in the giant size class.

India’s own breeds
Native alternatives of about this size
Nothing we could offer here honestly. A Great Dane is 49.9 to 79.4 kg on the American Kennel Club standard, and no native Indian breed with a published measurement is close enough in size for us to call it an alternative.
India’s measured native breeds top out well below this weight. The native dogs in this bracket are the Himalayan flock guardians, and only one of them, the Gaddi, has been measured at all. Our sources say it struggles on the plains for the same reason a Husky does, and it is still lighter than this breed.
The native breeds pages list all fifteen, measured and unmeasured, and say which is which.
