Yorkshire Terrier Price in India (2026)

A Yorkshire Terrier puppy in India costs about ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹32,000 to ₹80,000 with KCI papers, with show lines to ₹1,00,000. The coat behaves like human hair rather than fur, and Poodles.in says it tangles in India’s humid air within a single day if it is left unbrushed.

Indian climate

Needs active cooling in summer

Poodles.in says the Yorkshire Terrier’s silky, continuously growing coat resembles human hair in texture and growth and tangles in India’s humid air within a single day if left unbrushed. It names tear staining, dental disease and skin sensitivity as the toy breed’s other standing concerns.

The Yorkshire Terrier was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory. The list did include an open-ended "Terriers" entry that named no breed, which was among the reasons it was challenged, but nothing in the reporting suggests a toy terrier was the target.

In short

Key takeaways

  1. An unregistered home-bred Yorkshire Terrier runs ₹15,000 to ₹40,000, and one with KCI papers ₹25,000 to ₹80,000.
  2. Food alone is ₹1,200 to ₹3,000 a month, which is ₹14,400 to ₹36,000 a year.
  3. No source we found prices a Yorkshire Terrier outside the metros, so the national range is the best we can give for a smaller city.
  4. Adult weight is 1.8 to 3.2 kg on the American Kennel Club standard, with most growing done by about 10 months.
  5. Needs active cooling in summer. Poodles.
  6. The Yorkshire Terrier was not named in the 2024 central advisory on dangerous breeds.

The price

Yorkshire Terrier price by seller type

Who you buy from moves this price more than anything else does. Each row is the range our Indian sources state for that kind of seller, with the sources named in the notes column.

Where fromPrice in ₹What the sources say
Unregistered home breeder₹15,000 to ₹40,000What's The Cost puts a pet-quality Yorkie at ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 and Poodles.in gives ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 for the breed as a whole.
KCI-registered breeder₹25,000 to ₹80,000What's The Cost gives ₹32,000 to ₹60,000 for KCI registration with verified parentage and health-tested parents. Wrap In Fur prices the breed at ₹25,000 to ₹80,000 without splitting by seller.
Show quality₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000A conformation prospect from a proven line.
Imported line₹1,50,000 to ₹2,00,000What's The Cost calls an imported Yorkshire Terrier bloodline very rare in India.
Pet shopNot priced by breedNo source we found prices a pet-shop puppy breed by breed. One Indian source puts a breed puppy from a pet shop at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 across all breeds.
Shelter or indie rescue₹0 to ₹2,000Most shelters and indie rescues charge nothing, or a nominal ₹500 to ₹2,000 that often covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation.

Variation

What changes a Yorkshire Terrier's price

Papers roughly double the price at the pet end, from ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 unregistered to ₹32,000 to ₹60,000 with KCI registration on What’s The Cost.

Size claims are the thing to watch in any toy breed. The AKC standard is a flat 7 pounds, and a seller pricing a smaller dog higher is selling a label.

Imports are rare enough that What’s The Cost says so in its own note, which is why the import band sits so far above the rest.

City prices are documented for only three metros, so the calculator shows the national range outside them.

What does not change it

No source we read prices a Yorkshire Terrier by age, so the calculator on this page has no age input. A puppy is priced as a puppy and an older dog is usually a rescue rather than a sale. No source states a price difference between the sexes in this breed either, so the calculator does not ask.

What a Yorkshire Terrier costs to keep

The calculator at the top of this page adds these up for you. The puppy price is not in the total: this is what the first year of keeping the dog costs on top of buying it.

LineFigureWhat it is
Food₹1,200 to ₹3,000 a monthPoodles.in gives ₹1,200 to ₹1,800 for food. Wrap In Fur gives ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 as the whole monthly cost, so the top of this band is a ceiling rather than a food figure.
Grooming₹900 to ₹1,800 a monthPoodles.in prices this monthly. The coat grows continuously like human hair rather than shedding, so it needs cutting rather than only brushing.
Puppy vaccinations₹3,000 to ₹8,000The full first-year course.
Starter accessories₹3,000 to ₹13,000Bed, crate, bowls, collar, leash and toys, once.

Food and grooming are this breed's own sourced figures. The other lines are the same for any dog and are sourced on the price calculator page.

Not in the figure

  • Spaying or neutering: about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 at a shelter or a subsidised clinic, and ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 privately, more for a big dog.
  • Training classes: about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for a first course, and far more for a guarding breed.
  • Air conditioning: a real cost for a thick-coated breed in the plains, which our sources price per breed rather than generally.
  • Anything that goes wrong: one night in intensive care runs ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 and a cruciate repair ₹1.2 to ₹1.8 lakh.

Adult size

How big a Yorkshire Terrier gets

Adult weight and height are the American Kennel Club standard, quoted in the standard's own words below. The growth figures are our own calculation on a published veterinary growth standard, scaled to this breed's adult range.

The same growth engine drives our puppy weight calculator, which works in pounds. For a dog in the toy size class, weekly weight gain drops to almost nothing by about 10 months. Height finishes earlier than weight: this breed stands 18 cm to 20 cm at the shoulder when grown.

A Yorkie’s coat is hair rather than fur: it grows continuously and barely sheds, so it needs cutting rather than just brushing. Poodles.in says it tangles in Indian humidity within a single day if it is not brushed.

That makes grooming the standing cost, at ₹900 to ₹1,800 a month on our source, and a short clip is the practical Indian choice.

Teeth are the breed’s other running problem, as with most toy breeds, and Poodles.in names dental disease directly.

A dog this small loses and gains heat quickly. A cool room in summer matters more than the coat length does.

Legal

The Yorkshire Terrier was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory. The list did include an open-ended "Terriers" entry that named no breed, which was among the reasons it was challenged, but nothing in the reporting suggests a toy terrier was the target.

For what the 2024 advisory was and what the courts did with it, see the dog price page. Checked . Not legal advice.

Buying

How to buy a Yorkshire Terrier responsibly

Ask the adult weight of both parents rather than trusting a size label on the puppy.

Look at the teeth and ask what the breeder does about dental care. In a 7 pound dog it is the commonest long-term health cost.

The checks that apply to any puppy

  • See both parents, in the place they live. A puppy mill cannot offer you that, which is what makes it the most useful question you can ask.
  • Ask for the vaccination and deworming record with dates and what was given. The full first-year course runs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on our sources.
  • Check the KCI papers if you are paying for them. Both parents must be KCI-registered and carry KCI-approved microchips for a litter to be registrable, and the breeder must file within 90 days of the birth. Papers record parentage, not health.
  • Avoid a pet shop if you can. Supertails writes that many Indian pet shops source from puppy mills, and advises anyone who does buy from one to insist on the vaccination records and see a vet within 48 hours.
  • Consider a rescue. A shelter or indie rescue charges ₹0 to ₹2,000, often covering the first vaccination and the sterilisation.

FAQ

Yorkshire Terrier prices: the questions people ask

What is the Yorkshire Terrier price in India?
About ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹25,000 to ₹80,000 with KCI papers, across three Indian publishers. Show quality runs ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 and imported bloodlines, which What’s The Cost calls very rare in India, ₹1,50,000 to ₹2,00,000.
How much grooming does a Yorkie need in India?
More than most, because the coat grows continuously like human hair and tangles in Indian humidity within a day if unbrushed. Poodles.in puts the cost at ₹900 to ₹1,800 a month. Many Indian owners keep the coat in a short clip, which is sensible here.
Is a teacup Yorkie a real thing?
No. The AKC standard for the breed is a flat 7 pounds with no smaller category beneath it. A dog sold as a teacup Yorkie is an ordinary Yorkshire Terrier, often deliberately bred small, and the label is a price tactic rather than a size class.
Does a Yorkshire Terrier suit Indian weather?
The coat needs managing in humidity, and a dog this small changes temperature quickly, so a cool room matters in summer. Neither is a barrier the way an Arctic coat is, and the Yorkie is a common city dog in India for good reason.
How much does a Yorkie cost per month in India?
Wrap In Fur gives ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 a month all in. Poodles.in breaks out food at ₹1,200 to ₹1,800 and grooming at ₹900 to ₹1,800, which together are most of it.
How big does a Yorkshire Terrier get in kg?
1.8 to 3.2 kg as an adult, on the American Kennel Club standard, which states it as 7 pounds. Height at the shoulder is 18 to 20 cm. Most of the weight gain is done by about 10 months for a dog in the toy size class.

India’s own breeds

Native alternatives of about this size

Nothing we could offer here honestly. A Yorkshire Terrier is 1.8 to 3.2 kg on the American Kennel Club standard, and no native Indian breed with a published measurement is close enough in size for us to call it an alternative.

India’s small native dogs have never been formally measured. The Indian Spitz is the obvious candidate and it has no registry descriptor and no characterization study we could find; the Indie is a landrace with no standard at all. There are weights for both on pages that sell puppies, and we are not going to set one of those beside a kennel club standard as though the two were the same kind of claim.

The native breeds pages list all fifteen, measured and unmeasured, and say which is which.
