International siteChow Chow Price in India (2026)
A Chow Chow puppy in India costs about ₹30,000 to ₹80,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹60,000 to ₹1,35,000 from a KCI-registered one, with show lines from ₹1,15,000 to ₹2,80,000. Pet Care Tips puts the problem squarely: the enormous double coat and the flat-ish face make heat the central question for this breed in Indian conditions.

The range our sources give for a KCI-registered Chow Chow.
Supertails gives KCI-registered prices by city, from ₹62,000 to ₹1,05,000 in Hyderabad up to ₹80,000 to ₹1,35,000 in Delhi NCR. Pet Care Tips gives ₹80,000 to ₹1,20,000 and Inside Scroller ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000 and up. Mr n Mrs Pet states ₹65,000 to ₹1,50,000 and up.
In Delhi NCR
₹30,000 to ₹95,000
Delhi NCR is a metro. Across the metro cities our sources name, a Chow Chow runs ₹30,000 to ₹95,000. That is the general market across seller types, not the figure for one seller.
Inside Scroller’s metro rows run ₹30,000 to ₹95,000 for the general market. It also prices the hill stations separately and lower, at ₹28,000 to ₹65,000 for Shimla, Manali and Ooty.

Working estimates included. The number of deworming doses and vet visits in a first year is ours, not a figure from a source. The prices per dose and per visit are sourced.
Cooling is not in the total. For this breed our sources price it at ₹500 to ₹5,000 a month in the hot season, and it depends on your house rather than your dog.

Struggles in Indian heat
Pet Care Tips writes that the Chow’s enormous double coat and flat-ish face make heat the central problem in Indian conditions. Supertails calls heat-management infrastructure, from air conditioning to cooling mats, essential for survival rather than a luxury, and carries routine bloodwork for heat-stress monitoring as a standing cost.
The Chow Chow was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory.

The price
Chow Chow price by seller type
Who you buy from moves this price more than anything else does. Each row is the range our Indian sources state for that kind of seller, with the sources named in the notes column.
| Where from | Price in ₹ | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|
| Unregistered home breeder | ₹30,000 to ₹80,000 | Inside Scroller’s range starts at ₹30,000. Supertails gives pet quality by city, from ₹40,000 to ₹55,000 in Hyderabad up to ₹50,000 to ₹70,000 in Delhi NCR. Pet Care Tips gives ₹50,000 to ₹80,000 for pet quality. |
| KCI-registered breeder | ₹60,000 to ₹1,35,000 | Supertails gives KCI-registered prices by city, from ₹62,000 to ₹1,05,000 in Hyderabad up to ₹80,000 to ₹1,35,000 in Delhi NCR. Pet Care Tips gives ₹80,000 to ₹1,20,000 and Inside Scroller ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000 and up. Mr n Mrs Pet states ₹65,000 to ₹1,50,000 and up. |
| Show quality | ₹1,15,000 to ₹2,80,000 | Supertails gives ₹1,15,000 to ₹2,80,000 across its city table and Pet Care Tips ₹1,20,000 to ₹1,50,000. The gap between them is the widest on this page. |
| Pet shop | Not priced by breed | No source we found prices a pet-shop puppy breed by breed. One Indian source puts a breed puppy from a pet shop at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 across all breeds. |
| Shelter or indie rescue | ₹0 to ₹2,000 | Most shelters and indie rescues charge nothing, or a nominal ₹500 to ₹2,000 that often covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation. |

Variation
What changes a Chow Chow's price
Coat colour moves the price, and Inside Scroller says so without naming figures per colour. Supertails’ city table shows the clearer pattern: scarcity of breeders, not quality, is what sets the price in each city, and it lists only one Chow breeder in Chennai against four or five in Delhi.
Papers add a lot in this breed. The step from pet quality to KCI registered is roughly ₹30,000 on Supertails’ own city figures.
Females are priced ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 above males on Inside Scroller.
The hill stations are cheaper, at ₹28,000 to ₹65,000 on Inside Scroller against ₹30,000 to ₹95,000 across the metros. As with the Saint Bernard, the market is pricing in how hard the dog is to keep cool.
Our sources disagree most about show quality: ₹1,15,000 to ₹2,80,000 on Supertails against ₹1,20,000 to ₹1,50,000 on Pet Care Tips.
What does not change it
No source we read prices a Chow Chow by age, so the calculator on this page has no age input. A puppy is priced as a puppy and an older dog is usually a rescue rather than a sale. Sex does change the price in this breed, and the figure above is what a source states for it.
₹5,000 to ₹15,000
what a source says a female Chow Chow costs over a male
Running cost
What a Chow Chow costs to keep
The calculator at the top of this page adds these up for you. The puppy price is not in the total: this is what the first year of keeping the dog costs on top of buying it.
| Line | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Food | ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 a month | Inside Scroller gives ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 and Supertails ₹3,000 to ₹5,000, the latter warning that budget brands bring on skin allergies and ear infections in this breed. |
| Grooming | ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 a session | Every 6 to 8 weeks. Supertails disagrees sharply here. It prices professional grooming every 10 to 14 days at ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 a session, which comes to ₹3,500 to ₹7,000 a month, and calls it the single largest cost of owning the breed. Inside Scroller’s six to eight week interval gives a far smaller figure. The calculator uses Inside Scroller’s interval, so treat the grooming line as the low end of what this coat can cost. |
| Puppy vaccinations | ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 | The full first-year course. |
| Starter accessories | ₹3,000 to ₹13,000 | Bed, crate, bowls, collar, leash and toys, once. |
| Cooling | ₹500 to ₹5,000 a month | Supertails averages heat management over the year at ₹500 to ₹1,000 a month and calls it essential for survival rather than a luxury. Inside Scroller gives ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 a month in the summer months themselves. The band spans both. Not in the calculator total, because it depends on your house rather than your dog. |
Food and grooming are this breed's own sourced figures. The other lines are the same for any dog and are sourced on the price calculator page.

Not in the figure
- Spaying or neutering: about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 at a shelter or a subsidised clinic, and ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 privately, more for a big dog.
- Training classes: about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for a first course, and far more for a guarding breed.
- Air conditioning: a real cost for a thick-coated breed in the plains, which our sources price per breed rather than generally.
- Anything that goes wrong: one night in intensive care runs ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 and a cruciate repair ₹1.2 to ₹1.8 lakh.

Estimated from the adult weight range above and the growth curve for the large size class. The band runs from the low end of the adult range to the high end, so your own dog sits somewhere inside it. These are estimates, not measurements of this breed.

The same growth engine drives our puppy weight calculator, which works in pounds. For a dog in the large size class, weekly weight gain drops to almost nothing by about 11 months. Height finishes earlier than weight: this breed stands 43 cm to 51 cm at the shoulder when grown.
Indian climate
Struggles in Indian heat
Pet Care Tips writes that the Chow’s enormous double coat and flat-ish face make heat the central problem in Indian conditions. Supertails calls heat-management infrastructure, from air conditioning to cooling mats, essential for survival rather than a luxury, and carries routine bloodwork for heat-stress monitoring as a standing cost.
Both our Indian sources treat heat as the defining problem of owning this breed here. Pet Care Tips names the enormous double coat and the flat-ish face together. Supertails goes further and carries routine bloodwork for heat-stress monitoring as a standing veterinary cost.
Grooming is where the sources part company, and it matters. Supertails puts professional grooming every 10 to 14 days at ₹3,500 to ₹7,000 a month and calls it the single largest cost of the breed. Inside Scroller puts it at ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 every six to eight weeks. The calculator uses the smaller figure, so read the grooming line as a floor, not a forecast.
The eyes need watching. Inside Scroller folds eye-care monitoring into its ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 annual veterinary figure for the breed.
A Chow Chow is also a reserved, independent dog rather than a family retriever, which has nothing to do with heat but a lot to do with whether it suits your house.
Legal

Buying
How to buy a Chow Chow responsibly
There are very few Chow breeders in India. Supertails counts four or five in Delhi NCR and one in Chennai, which means travel or a shipped puppy for most buyers, and a shipped puppy is harder to assess.
Decide honestly whether you can keep the dog cool for its whole life before you buy, not after the first summer.
Budget grooming on Supertails’ figures rather than the lower ones. A matted Chow coat in Indian humidity is a welfare problem, not an appearance problem.
The checks that apply to any puppy
- See both parents, in the place they live. A puppy mill cannot offer you that, which is what makes it the most useful question you can ask.
- Ask for the vaccination and deworming record with dates and what was given. The full first-year course runs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on our sources.
- Check the KCI papers if you are paying for them. Both parents must be KCI-registered and carry KCI-approved microchips for a litter to be registrable, and the breeder must file within 90 days of the birth. Papers record parentage, not health.
- Avoid a pet shop if you can. Supertails writes that many Indian pet shops source from puppy mills, and advises anyone who does buy from one to insist on the vaccination records and see a vet within 48 hours.
- Consider a rescue. A shelter or indie rescue charges ₹0 to ₹2,000, often covering the first vaccination and the sterilisation.
FAQ
Chow Chow prices: the questions people ask
- What is the Chow Chow price in India?
- About ₹30,000 to ₹80,000 for pet quality and ₹60,000 to ₹1,35,000 with KCI papers, across four Indian sources. Show-quality figures range from ₹1,15,000 to ₹2,80,000 depending on which source you read.
- Can a Chow Chow live in India?
- Our sources say it needs serious help to. Pet Care Tips calls heat the central problem for the breed in Indian conditions because of the coat and the flat-ish face, and Supertails calls cooling infrastructure essential for survival rather than a luxury. The hill stations are a different question from the plains.
- How much does Chow Chow grooming cost in India?
- Our two sources disagree by a factor of three. Supertails says every 10 to 14 days at ₹1,200 to ₹2,500 a session, which is ₹3,500 to ₹7,000 a month and the largest single cost of the breed. Inside Scroller says ₹1,500 to ₹3,000 every six to eight weeks. We show both and the calculator uses the lower one, so treat the result as a floor.
- Why are Chow Chows cheaper in Shimla than in Mumbai?
- Inside Scroller prices the hill stations at ₹28,000 to ₹65,000 against ₹30,000 to ₹95,000 across the metros. Metro demand is higher and breeders are scarcer there, and the cooler cities are where the breed is easier to keep, so the premium follows the fashion rather than the dog.
- Is a Chow Chow a good family dog?
- It is a reserved and independent breed rather than an outgoing one, which is a temperament question separate from the climate one. If you want a dog that greets visitors, this is not that breed.
- How big does a Chow Chow get in kg?
- 20.4 to 31.8 kg as an adult, on the American Kennel Club standard, which states it as 45-70 pounds. Height at the shoulder is 43 to 51 cm. Most of the weight gain is done by about 11 months for a dog in the large size class.

Native alternatives of about this size
A Chow Chow runs 20.4 to 31.8 kg on the American Kennel Club standard. Two native breeds of about that size, with the weight our sources actually measured, and the thing that usually decides it in India: whether the dog needs cooling.
- ChippiparaiTamil Nadu13.6 to 32.5 kg on our sources, against 20.4 to 31.8 kg for a Chow Chow.Suits the Indian climate · NBAGR registered
- RajapalayamTamil Nadu14 to 32 kg on our sources, against 20.4 to 31.8 kg for a Chow Chow.Suits the Indian climate · NBAGR registered
This is not a claim that a native breed is the better dog. It is a claim that it is usually the invisible option: nobody advertises it, so nobody considers it. On climate there is something to choose: our sources say the Chow Chow struggles in Indian heat, and say the opposite of the breeds above.
Put any two of them side by side in the comparison tool, or see all fifteen native breeds, measured and unmeasured, on the breeds pages.
