International siteGerman Shepherd Price in India (2026)
A German Shepherd puppy in India costs about ₹15,000 to ₹28,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹40,000 to ₹85,000 from a KCI-registered one, with European working-line imports running from ₹1,00,000 to ₹4,00,000. The breed has been bred in India for generations, so the cheap end of this market is enormous and the quality in it varies more than in any other breed on this list.

Indian climate
Needs active cooling in summer
Supertails writes that India's heat and humidity, especially in coastal cities and through the summer, can be hard on the breed, and that a short or medium double coat is significantly better suited to the Indian climate than a long coat.
The German Shepherd was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory. Three other shepherd breeds were, the Central Asian, Caucasian and South Russian, which is a common source of confusion.

The price
German Shepherd price by seller type
Who you buy from moves this price more than anything else does. Each row is the range our Indian sources state for that kind of seller, with the sources named in the notes column.
| Where from | Price in ₹ | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|
| Unregistered home breeder | ₹15,000 to ₹28,000 | Supertails prices a pet-quality puppy with no papers at ₹18,000 to ₹28,000. Inside Scroller’s range starts at ₹15,000. Supertails also warns that any purebred German Shepherd advertised under ₹15,000 is a scam, a puppy-mill dog or a mix. |
| KCI-registered breeder | ₹40,000 to ₹85,000 | Supertails gives ₹40,000 to ₹60,000 for KCI registered and ₹28,000 to ₹45,000 for a good breeder without papers. Inside Scroller puts KCI registered or show quality at ₹40,000 to ₹85,000 and up. Mr n Mrs Pet states ₹40,000 to ₹2,00,000 and up. |
| Show quality | ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000 | Supertails gives ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000 for a show or champion bloodline and ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 for a working line. |
| Imported line | ₹1,00,000 to ₹4,00,000 and up | Supertails gives ₹1,00,000 to ₹4,00,000 and up for an imported dog. Inside Scroller prices a Czech or German working-line import at ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000 and up, so the two disagree about where imports start. |
| Pet shop | Not priced by breed | No source we found prices a pet-shop puppy breed by breed. One Indian source puts a breed puppy from a pet shop at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 across all breeds. |
| Breed rescue | ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 | A rescue fee rather than a purchase price. |

Variation
What changes a German Shepherd's price
Coat length is a price factor here and also a welfare one. Supertails puts a long-coat German Shepherd at ₹45,000 to ₹80,000, above the short-coat price, while also saying a short or medium coat is significantly better suited to the Indian climate. You are paying more for the version that copes less well.
Working line against show line is the other split. Supertails prices Indian working lines at ₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000 and show or champion bloodlines at ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000. A working line is bred for drive, which is a serious commitment in a flat.
Imports are where the figures stop agreeing. Supertails puts an imported dog at ₹1,00,000 to ₹4,00,000 and up, while Inside Scroller prices Czech and German working-line imports at ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000 and up. We show both.
City matters: Inside Scroller puts tier 2 and tier 3 together at ₹10,000 to ₹45,000 against ₹15,000 to ₹90,000 across the metros.
Supertails’ own recommendation, which we pass on rather than endorse, is that most Indian families are better served by a ₹30,000 to ₹45,000 puppy from a breeder who health-tests than by paying for show credentials.
What does not change it
No source we read prices a German Shepherd by age, so the calculator on this page has no age input. A puppy is priced as a puppy and an older dog is usually a rescue rather than a sale. No source states a price difference between the sexes in this breed either, so the calculator does not ask.

Running cost
What a German Shepherd costs to keep
The calculator at the top of this page adds these up for you. The puppy price is not in the total: this is what the first year of keeping the dog costs on top of buying it.
| Line | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Food | ₹2,500 to ₹8,000 a month | Supertails gives ₹2,500 to ₹8,000 depending on diet quality and Inside Scroller ₹3,000 to ₹6,000. |
| Grooming | ₹800 to ₹1,500 a session | Every 6 to 8 weeks. Supertails instead gives ₹800 to ₹2,500 a month for professional grooming. Both add weekly brushing at home. |
| Puppy vaccinations | ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 | The full first-year course. |
| Starter accessories | ₹3,000 to ₹13,000 | Bed, crate, bowls, collar, leash and toys, once. |
Food and grooming are this breed's own sourced figures. The other lines are the same for any dog and are sourced on the price calculator page.

Not in the figure
- Spaying or neutering: about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 at a shelter or a subsidised clinic, and ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 privately, more for a big dog.
- Training classes: about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for a first course, and far more for a guarding breed.
- Air conditioning: a real cost for a thick-coated breed in the plains, which our sources price per breed rather than generally.
- Anything that goes wrong: one night in intensive care runs ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 and a cruciate repair ₹1.2 to ₹1.8 lakh.

The same growth engine drives our puppy weight calculator, which works in pounds. For a dog in the extra large size class, weekly weight gain drops to almost nothing by about 11 months. Height finishes earlier than weight: this breed stands 56 cm to 66 cm at the shoulder when grown.
Indian climate
Needs active cooling in summer
Supertails writes that India's heat and humidity, especially in coastal cities and through the summer, can be hard on the breed, and that a short or medium double coat is significantly better suited to the Indian climate than a long coat.
A German Shepherd manages Indian conditions better than an Arctic breed but not easily. Supertails names heat, humidity and grain-heavy budget food as the three biggest problems the breed runs into here.
Pick the short or medium coat if you have the choice. Supertails is explicit that it suits the climate significantly better than the long coat, which is the one that costs more.
Ears are upright, which helps airflow, but Supertails still flags ear infections as common in humid weather. The double coat needs brushing through the shedding season to keep skin trouble down.
Legal
Legal status
The German Shepherd was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory. Three other shepherd breeds were, the Central Asian, Caucasian and South Russian, which is a common source of confusion.
For what the 2024 advisory was and what the courts did with it, see the dog price page. Checked . Not legal advice.
Buying
How to buy a German Shepherd responsibly
This is the breed with the largest unregistered market in India, so the usual checks matter most here. See both parents. Ask for the vaccination and deworming record. Ask what the hips were scored and expect a straight answer.
Hip dysplasia is the expensive risk: Supertails prices corrective surgery at ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 and bloat surgery at ₹40,000 to ₹1,00,000. A breeder who screens is cheaper than one who does not.
Supertails puts a rescue German Shepherd at ₹5,000 to ₹15,000, and there are many of them.
The checks that apply to any puppy
- See both parents, in the place they live. A puppy mill cannot offer you that, which is what makes it the most useful question you can ask.
- Ask for the vaccination and deworming record with dates and what was given. The full first-year course runs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on our sources.
- Check the KCI papers if you are paying for them. Both parents must be KCI-registered and carry KCI-approved microchips for a litter to be registrable, and the breeder must file within 90 days of the birth. Papers record parentage, not health.
- Avoid a pet shop if you can. Supertails writes that many Indian pet shops source from puppy mills, and advises anyone who does buy from one to insist on the vaccination records and see a vet within 48 hours.
- Consider a rescue. A German Shepherd rescue charges ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 on our sources, and the dogs are usually adults, which tells you what you are getting.
FAQ
German Shepherd prices: the questions people ask
- What is the price of a German Shepherd puppy in India in 2026?
- About ₹15,000 to ₹28,000 from an unregistered home breeder, ₹40,000 to ₹85,000 with KCI papers, and ₹60,000 to ₹1,00,000 for a show or champion line, on Supertails and Inside Scroller. Supertails warns that anything advertised under ₹15,000 as a purebred is a scam, a puppy-mill dog or a mix.
- Is an Alsatian the same as a German Shepherd?
- Yes. Alsatian is an older British name for the same breed and is still widely used in India. Sellers sometimes price the two as though they were different dogs, which is worth knowing before you negotiate.
- Should I pay more for a long-coat German Shepherd in India?
- Supertails prices the long coat at ₹45,000 to ₹80,000, above the short coat, and separately says a short or medium coat suits the Indian climate significantly better. So the premium buys you the harder dog to keep cool. That is a decision, not a bargain.
- Was the German Shepherd on the banned breeds list?
- No. The 2024 central advisory named the Central Asian, Caucasian and South Russian Shepherd Dogs, not the German Shepherd. That advisory was set aside by two High Courts in April 2024 and the government told the Bombay High Court in January 2025 that it was not acting on it.
- What does a German Shepherd cost to keep for a year in India?
- Supertails puts a realistic first year at ₹1,00,000 to ₹2,40,000 including the puppy, vaccinations, food, training, grooming and accessories. The calculator on this page builds the same kind of figure line by line so you can see what is in it.
- How big does a German Shepherd get in kg?
- 22.7 to 40.8 kg as an adult, on the American Kennel Club standard, which states it as 65-90 pounds (male), 50-70 pounds (female). Height at the shoulder is 56 to 66 cm. Most of the weight gain is done by about 11 months for a dog in the extra large size class.

Native alternatives of about this size
A German Shepherd runs 22.7 to 40.8 kg on the American Kennel Club standard. Two native breeds of about that size, with the weight our sources actually measured, and the thing that usually decides it in India: whether the dog needs cooling.
- Mudhol HoundKarnataka21 to 40 kg on our sources, against 22.7 to 40.8 kg for a German Shepherd.Suits the Indian climate · NBAGR registered
- ChippiparaiTamil Nadu13.6 to 32.5 kg on our sources, against 22.7 to 40.8 kg for a German Shepherd.Suits the Indian climate · NBAGR registered
This is not a claim that a native breed is the better dog. It is a claim that it is usually the invisible option: nobody advertises it, so nobody considers it. On climate there is something to choose: our sources say the German Shepherd needs active cooling in summer, and say the opposite of the breeds above.
Put any two of them side by side in the comparison tool, or see all fifteen native breeds, measured and unmeasured, on the breeds pages.
