A Labrador puppy in India costs about ₹8,000 to ₹45,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 from a KCI-registered one. It is the cheapest of the popular large breeds here and the one our sources are most comfortable with in Indian conditions, because the short coat sheds heat better than any double-coated breed on this list.

Delhi NCR is a metro. Across the metro cities our sources name, a Labrador Retriever runs ₹10,000 to ₹70,000. That is the general market across seller types, not the figure for one seller.
Inside Scroller’s metro rows run ₹10,000 in Kolkata to ₹58,000 in Mumbai. Supertails is higher, giving Delhi NCR ₹25,000 to ₹70,000 and Chennai ₹20,000 to ₹61,000, and adds that flight-nanny transport costs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on top.

Suits the Indian climate
Inside Scroller writes that in India’s climate the Labrador’s short coat handles heat better than double-coated breeds, while noting that a black coat absorbs more solar radiation than a lighter one, so midday outdoor exercise is best avoided in peak summer.
The Labrador Retriever was not on the list in the 2024 central advisory.

The price
Labrador Retriever price by seller type
Who you buy from moves this price more than anything else does. Each row is the range our Indian sources state for that kind of seller, with the sources named in the notes column.
| Where from | Price in ₹ | What the sources say |
|---|---|---|
| Unregistered home breeder | ₹8,000 to ₹45,000 | Supertails gives ₹8,000 to ₹25,000 for a pet-quality puppy, Inside Scroller’s city rows start at ₹10,000, and Aruani Pet Stop gives ₹15,000 to ₹45,000. The Supertails price list separately gives ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for the breed as a whole. |
| KCI-registered breeder | ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 and up | Supertails gives ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 for a KCI-registered Labrador and Inside Scroller ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 and up. Mr n Mrs Pet states ₹30,000 to ₹1,20,000 and up. |
| Pet shop | Not priced by breed | No source we found prices a pet-shop puppy breed by breed. One Indian source puts a breed puppy from a pet shop at ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 across all breeds. |
| Shelter or indie rescue | ₹0 to ₹2,000 | Most shelters and indie rescues charge nothing, or a nominal ₹500 to ₹2,000 that often covers the first vaccination and the sterilisation. |

Variation
What changes a Labrador Retriever's price
Supply is why this is the cheapest big breed in India. Labradors have been bred here for decades in every city, and the unregistered end of the market is enormous.
Colour is not a legitimate price factor and is sometimes sold as one. Inside Scroller states that reputable breeders charge the same for black, yellow and chocolate puppies. If a seller charges more for a colour, that is a sales position rather than a difference in the dog.
The English or show type, blockier in build, runs ₹20,000 to ₹60,000 on Inside Scroller against the working type.
Papers add roughly ₹20,000 at the pet end. Supertails puts show quality at up to ₹70,000 without giving a lower figure, so we have left show quality out of the calculator for this breed rather than invent a bottom end for it.
Transport is a real line here because litters are everywhere and buyers shop between cities. Supertails prices flight-nanny transport at ₹3,000 to ₹8,000.
What does not change it
No source we read prices a Labrador Retriever by age, so the calculator on this page has no age input. A puppy is priced as a puppy and an older dog is usually a rescue rather than a sale. No source states a price difference between the sexes in this breed either, so the calculator does not ask.

Running cost
What a Labrador Retriever costs to keep
The calculator at the top of this page adds these up for you. The puppy price is not in the total: this is what the first year of keeping the dog costs on top of buying it.
| Line | Figure | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Food | ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 a month | Inside Scroller gives ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 and the Supertails price list gives ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 for Labrador food, which is one of the few figures two sources give identically. |
| Grooming | ₹600 to ₹1,200 a session | Every 4 to 4 weeks. A short coat, so this is a bath and a tidy. Supertails adds weekly brushing at home, a deshedding tool and a bath every three to four weeks, and warns that over-bathing irritates skin in Indian humidity. |
| Puppy vaccinations | ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 | The full first-year course. |
| Starter accessories | ₹3,000 to ₹13,000 | Bed, crate, bowls, collar, leash and toys, once. |
Food and grooming are this breed's own sourced figures. The other lines are the same for any dog and are sourced on the price calculator page.

Not in the figure
- Spaying or neutering: about ₹1,500 to ₹5,000 at a shelter or a subsidised clinic, and ₹6,000 to ₹25,000 privately, more for a big dog.
- Training classes: about ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for a first course, and far more for a guarding breed.
- Air conditioning: a real cost for a thick-coated breed in the plains, which our sources price per breed rather than generally.
- Anything that goes wrong: one night in intensive care runs ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 and a cruciate repair ₹1.2 to ₹1.8 lakh.

The same growth engine drives our puppy weight calculator, which works in pounds. For a dog in the extra large size class, weekly weight gain drops to almost nothing by about 11 months. Height finishes earlier than weight: this breed stands 55 cm to 62 cm at the shoulder when grown.
Indian climate
Suits the Indian climate
Inside Scroller writes that in India’s climate the Labrador’s short coat handles heat better than double-coated breeds, while noting that a black coat absorbs more solar radiation than a lighter one, so midday outdoor exercise is best avoided in peak summer.
This is the large breed our sources worry about least. Inside Scroller says the short coat handles Indian heat better than any double-coated breed, which is as close to an endorsement as these pages get.
The one caveat is colour, and it is physics rather than breeding: a black coat absorbs more solar radiation than a yellow one, so Inside Scroller advises keeping a black Labrador out of midday sun in peak summer.
Ears and skin are the Indian problems instead. Supertails flags ear infections and skin allergies as common in humid conditions, and warns that over-bathing strips the natural oils and irritates the skin, so a bath every three to four weeks is enough.
Weight is the breed’s own worst enemy. Supertails notes a genetic predisposition to overeating, and an overweight Labrador copes with heat much worse than a fit one.

Buying
How to buy a Labrador Retriever responsibly
Hip and elbow scores are the question to ask in this breed, and a volume market is exactly where they get skipped.
Do not pay a premium for a colour. Inside Scroller is explicit that reputable breeders do not charge one.
If a puppy is being flown to you, the transport cost is ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on Supertails and you are buying a dog you have not met. Seeing the mother is worth the trip.
The checks that apply to any puppy
- See both parents, in the place they live. A puppy mill cannot offer you that, which is what makes it the most useful question you can ask.
- Ask for the vaccination and deworming record with dates and what was given. The full first-year course runs ₹3,000 to ₹8,000 on our sources.
- Check the KCI papers if you are paying for them. Both parents must be KCI-registered and carry KCI-approved microchips for a litter to be registrable, and the breeder must file within 90 days of the birth. Papers record parentage, not health.
- Avoid a pet shop if you can. Supertails writes that many Indian pet shops source from puppy mills, and advises anyone who does buy from one to insist on the vaccination records and see a vet within 48 hours.
- Consider a rescue. A shelter or indie rescue charges ₹0 to ₹2,000, often covering the first vaccination and the sterilisation.
FAQ
Labrador Retriever prices: the questions people ask
- What is the Labrador puppy price in India?
- About ₹8,000 to ₹45,000 from an unregistered home breeder and ₹25,000 to ₹60,000 with KCI papers, across Supertails, Inside Scroller, Aruani Pet Stop and Mr n Mrs Pet. It is the cheapest of the popular large breeds in India.
- Is a black Labrador more expensive in India?
- It should not be. Inside Scroller states plainly that reputable breeders charge the same price for black, yellow and chocolate puppies. A colour premium is a sales position, not a difference in the dog.
- Is a Labrador good for the Indian climate?
- Among the large breeds, yes. Inside Scroller says the short coat handles heat better than double-coated breeds. The practical cautions are to keep a black dog out of midday sun in peak summer, watch the ears in humid weather, and keep the weight down.
- How much does a Labrador cost per month in India?
- Inside Scroller gives ₹5,000 to ₹12,000 a month with food at ₹2,500 to ₹5,000, and Aruani Pet Stop gives ₹6,000 to ₹10,000. The calculator on this page builds the first year line by line.
- Why is a Labrador cheaper than a Golden Retriever in India?
- More breeders and more litters. On our sources a KCI-registered Labrador starts around ₹25,000 and a Golden around ₹40,000, and the gap is supply rather than anything about the dogs. The Labrador is also the easier of the two to keep in Indian heat, because the coat is shorter.
- How big does a Labrador Retriever get in kg?
- 24.9 to 36.3 kg as an adult, on the American Kennel Club standard, which states it as 65-80 pounds (male), 55-70 pounds (female). Height at the shoulder is 55 to 62 cm. Most of the weight gain is done by about 11 months for a dog in the extra large size class.

Native alternatives of about this size
A Labrador Retriever runs 24.9 to 36.3 kg on the American Kennel Club standard. Two native breeds of about that size, with the weight our sources actually measured, and the thing that usually decides it in India: whether the dog needs cooling.
- Mudhol HoundKarnataka21 to 40 kg on our sources, against 24.9 to 36.3 kg for a Labrador Retriever.Suits the Indian climate · NBAGR registered
- ChippiparaiTamil Nadu13.6 to 32.5 kg on our sources, against 24.9 to 36.3 kg for a Labrador Retriever.Suits the Indian climate · NBAGR registered
This is not a claim that a native breed is the better dog. It is a claim that it is usually the invisible option: nobody advertises it, so nobody considers it. The Labrador Retriever itself is one of the imports our sources do not treat cooling as a requirement for, so on that count there is nothing to choose between them.
Put any two of them side by side in the comparison tool, or see all fifteen native breeds, measured and unmeasured, on the breeds pages.
